Mae Young Classic: Season 2 – Episode 3

September 19, 2018 – Winter Park, Florida

Kaitlyn def. Kavita Devi {First Round Match}
I don’t think “conjecture” means what Renee Young thinks it means. Do Rinku Singh and Saurav Gurjar actually know and like Devi, or is this just another example of WWE thinking that people of the same race need to be shown cheering each other on? Michael Cole says that Devi’s first round loss to Dakota Kai has over 20 million views on YouTube. It actually has 34 million views and it’s the most viewed Mae Young Classic match on their channel. That’s pretty insane. I watched this match after watching Ricochet vs. Pete Dunne, so it never really had a chance. That said, Devi is more agile than she was last year, and Kaitlyn didn’t look too rusty. **

Toni Storm def. Jinny {First Round Match}
Storm has a regular hat on now. I miss her ridiculously tiny hat. The IIconics are in the crowd cheering for Storm, so it’s not just that WWE think all people of a race are friends, but they think all people in a country are friends. This was really basic, except for a moment in which Jinny tried to make this feel personal and pretty much failed. **

Xia Li def. Karen Q {First Round Match}
Since Li is as much of a WWE original as their can be, and in a way she’s the only Mae Young Classic original (this is her 2nd ever televised match, the first being in last year’s tournament), there was no way they were knocking her out in the first round again. This was a little one-sided and a lot of fun. Li wasn’t terrible last year, but she was downright bombastic here. Good stuff. **¾

Mia Yim def. Allysin Kay {First Round Match}
Kay is from Detroit, so I love her and the finish makes me sad. The crowd was in and out of this one, as was I. When I was in it, they seemed familiar with each other, which was nice. Actually, it was refreshing in general to have something more than the tournament (in this case, an old grudge) attached to a match on this show. ***
