NXT 466

August 29, 2018 – Winter Park, Florida

William Regal, along with a legal team, is officially starting his investigation into who assaulted and injured Amsterdam Black.

Johnny Gargano limps out to the ring and is given a huge ovation, though he agrees with the few fans he hears jeering him. He’s made a lot of mistakes, and he thought if he won the title at Takeover it’d make up for all that. But he didn’t win. He admits that Tommaso Ciampa is in his head, and he has no idea what to do next. Regal comes out to find out if it was Gargano who attacked Black. Gargano wants Regal to intuit his answer, but he doesn’t outright deny it. Velveteen Dream comes out. He’s tired of hearing Gargano lament, and he doesn’t think the show should be about a guy who is on the shelf. They’ll fight next week when Gargano is back to 100%.

Dakota Kai def. Aliyah
There was good action for most of this, but neither woman really got me engaged. Kai’s finisher is pretty cool, but where were the kicks?! **¼

In his office, Regal seemingly absolves Dream of guilt. Regal calls in the Forgotten Sons, who were introduced in some of the parking lot footage a couple weeks ago as if we were supposed to already know who they are. They’re a Jaxson Ryker, who was Gunner in NXT, and a repackaged Steve Cutler, who are both doing an angry bitter veteran gimmick, joined by Wesley Blake for some reason. They claim they didn’t do it, and that they’ve been trying to get Regal’s attention for a long time. Regal offers them a tag match and doesn’t seem to think they’re guilty either.

It seems that Lars Sullivan has attacked EC3 backstage and given him the world’s fastest developing black eye.

Jesus Cross tells Regal she knows who did it, but she’s too insane to say who it is. Bianca Belair interrupts because she doesn’t like being kept waiting. She wants a title shot. Cross wants to “play,” so they’ll probably have a number one contender match.

Sullivan says he attacked EC3 because EC3 said that Sullivan might have been the guy who attacked Black. Then he squashes Raul Mendoza. I guess it wasn’t actually a match because the referee wouldn’t count the pin. That’s a nice little detail that makes NXT feel more sport-like.

Keith Lee def. Luke Menzies
I continue to anticipate a time when I understand why people are so excited by Lee, and it’s not going to happen in a squash. Also, Menzies is a terrible name. N/A

Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch are coming back in two weeks and I’M FREAKING OUT!

Roderick Strong & Adam Cole def. Ricochet & Pete Dunne
Cole subs in for O’Reilly at the last minute. This was a good, but not great tag team match, and my expectations for it might have been unreasonably high. The only time it was outright disappointing was an awkward stretch between Strong and Dunne. Other than that it was hard-hitting and high-flying, just not exceptionally so. After the match, the Undisputed Era beats on its fallen foes until the War Raiders chase them off. ***½
