August 15, 2018 – Winter Park, Florida
The show starts with the revelation that Amsterdam Black has been laid out in the parking lot. The framing of the scene sets up a Who Shot Mr. Burns scenario, as basically the whole NXT roster was somewhere in the area and now suspects. I cannot tell you how much I love that they’re doing this. The main event for NXT Takeover Brooklyn has been changed to Johnny Gargano challenging Tommaso Ciampa in a one-on-one Last Man Standing match for the title.
Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins def. Nick Miller & Shane Thorne
I love a cheating babyface team. Everyone here looked alright, but Ford looked great. More of him please and thank you. **¾
Kairi Sane def. Aliyah
If you’re going to do a squash, you might as well have the challenger for the upcoming PPV destroy the jobber while making eye contact with the champion who is sitting on commentary. Dangling plot thread: Shayna Baszler was talking to Aliyah before the match, and that didn’t go anywhere. N/A
Velveteen Dream comes to the ring to talk about how he’s going to beat EC3 in Brooklyn. EC3 comes out to talk about mind real estate and hit Dream with a TKO. Not sure I needed that segment, but I didn’t hate it.
Tyler Bate def. Roderick Strong
Bate is a freak. I don’t understand how he is this good at 21 years old. These guys just went out and had one of the best matches under 10 minutes that you can have. It got a little shaky both times that Kyle O’Reilly got on the apron, and it didn’t have a Sick Kick in it (which is disappointing because I named that move), but good lord can these guys go. ****
Because the Cruiserweight Championship is now an NXT title I’m reviewing every title defense of the WWE/NXT Cruiserweight Championship and posting them on the NXT TV reviews that preceded them. Here’s the title defense from SummerSlam 2018.
August 19, 2018 – Brooklyn, New York
Cedric Alexander def. Drew Gulak {WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match}
Gulak earned the right to challenge Alexander for the title by defeating Mustafa Ali, Hideo Itami, and TJP in a fatal four-way match on 205 Live. Gulak’s friends Jack Gallagher & Brian Kendrick were banned from ringside here. This was pretty pedestrian stuff until the last couple of minutes, when they worked through chain wrestling so wild that they actually lost track of it a little bit. Alexander came out on top of that exchange and forced Gulak into a pin at 9:55 (shown). ***
