NXT 460

July 25, 2018 – Winter Park, Florida

Adam Cole def. Sean Maluta
I’m going back and forth between watching new episodes of NXT and episodes from right after the reboot, and it’s amazing how much better the product is now. Case in point: squashes. Cole gave up a decent amount of offense to Maluta and they both came out smelling like roses. Also, Cole is the coolest wrestler on earth right now, which is actually a bit of a problem since heels shouldn’t be that cool, even if after the match he looks like a wuss for not giving Ricochet a title shot. **¾

Ricochet calls out that Cole defeating Maluta isn’t a big deal because he’d already forgotten his name, which is funny because I had to rewind and remind myself his name as well. And then we get a big standoff between the Undisputed Era on one side and Ricochet, the War Raiders, and Mustache Mountain on the other.

They do a backstage contract signing for the Women’s Championship match at Takeover Brooklyn between Shayna Baszler and Kairi Sain and it totally exposes how stupid these things are by trying to be dramatic without the benefit of a live crowd to take some of the expository lifting off of the wrestlers. Also William Regal looked like a doof. Later on Shayna has a cringey exchange with Candace LeRae too. These backstage segments are brutal.

Lacey Evans def. Tenilla Price
Evans has me feeling some type of way. This is the first match of hers I’ve seen (how’s that for a clue about the order in which I’ve written these things) and I’m impressed. Great for a squash. **

Tommaso Ciampa def. Amsterdam Black {NXT Championship Match}
Ciampa can do no wrong right now. This match was incredible. In 2018 Ciampa is over as a legitimate hated heel and everything he touches turns to wrestling gold. He was totally in Black’s head here, something we haven’t seen happen when Black has faced anyone else (except Sullivan to some extent). Because of that and because Ciampa was also in Johnny Gargano’s head, he was able to win the title. I had a knee jerk reaction to knock off a bit for all the gaga at the end, but as I’m writing this I realize that it absolutely made the match better. ****¾
