NXT 446

April 25, 2018 – Winter Park, Florida

The new and improved Undisputed Era start the show. Bobby Fish is with the group, but he’s officially passed his half of the tag titles onto Roderick Strong. I think Fish would have made an interesting Vaudevillain, but he’s lucky as hell he came in after they were gone. Strong turned on Pete Dunne because he’s no fool and he knows that Dunne wouldn’t have stayed loyal. But he saw the way the Undisputed Era looked out for each other and he wanted to be a part of it. He had the epiphany in the middle of the match at Takeover. This was done really well. The motivation makes sense, and Strong as a heel gets him away from falling into the Sami Zayn/Tye Dillinger model, which is good because while they could just move on to the main roster to get away from the loser-of-the-big-one stigma, Strong doesn’t seem to be going anywhere for awhile. Johnny Gargano can fill that role just fine. Adam Cole sends the rest of the group to the back because he doesn’t need help defending the belt against his opponent tonight.

Adam Cole def. Oney Lorcan {NXT North American Championship Match}
The finish to this match was hilarious. Lorcan had targeted Cole’s injured ribs so Kyle O’Reilly ran out with a trainer to check on him as Strong attacked Lorcan. Cole realizing his buddies had fixed the match for him was hilarious. Danny Burch tries to make the save after the match but both baldies get beaten up. ***

Otis Dozovic & Tucker Knight def. Tino Sabbatelli & Riddick Moss
What did Heavy Machinery do to be tied to Moss & Sabbatelli for this long? They finally got around to having Sabbatelli bail on Moss here after a fun little tag team match. After the match, Heavy Machinery calls out the War Raiders. They’re going to raid all the buffets and gyms and take all the steaks and weights. They make what in hindsight is a very good point about the War Raiders being very prone to attacking people when they’re down. Doesn’t make them seem all that tough. **½

They do this creepy, uncomfortably bullying segment between Dakota Kai and Shayna Baszler that on the one hand I respect for being provocative, but on the other hand it just feels really uncomfortable. I guess it’s supposed to feel uncomfortable.

Tommaso Ciampa and his wrecked face attack Johnny Gargano as Gargano was making his way out for his title match. They have a killer brawl until Ciampa hits an Air Raid Crash through a table. Gargano is in agony as he’s taken out on a stretcher. Kassius Ohno and Candice LeRae go with Gargano in the ambulance, and Ciampa waves as it drives away. Back in the building, Amsterdam Black is furious and calls out Ciampa, but SAnitY answers. Eric Young starts ranting about how Gargano represents hope and Ciampa is chaotic, and since SAnitY thrives on chaos he wants to take advantage of the opportunity. Black gets tired of it and wants to know if Young wants the title. Young nods and it’s on. From Gargano to Young, this was one of the best non-wrestling segments in the history, if not the best.

Amsterdam Black def. Eric Young {NXT Championship Match}
I think this more or less proved that Young’s ceiling isn’t going to be a main roster main event. It was mostly dull when Black wasn’t doing his shtick. After the match, Black kicks each male member of SAnitY right out of NXT with the Black Mass. **¼

Because the Cruiserweight Championship is now an NXT title I’m reviewing every title defense of the WWE/NXT Cruiserweight Championship and posting them on the NXT TV reviews that preceded them. Here’s the title defense from Greatest Royal Rumble.

April 27, 2018 – Jeddah, Makkah

Cedric Alexander def. Kalisto {WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match}
Kalisto won a gauntlet match to get this shot. The crowd was actually pretty hot when this thing started, but then they treated this like American crowds do and mostly ignored it in favor of their cell phone calls. That didn’t stop these guys from gutting it out and having a fun little bop of a match. Alexander countered the Salida del Sol to hit the Lumber Check for the win at 10:14 in a hell of a reversal. ***¼
