NXT 437

February 28, 2018 – Atlanta, Georgia

Velveteen Dream def. Tyler Bate
The combined age of these two is almost younger than AJ Styles. Just think about that for a minute. Meanwhile, everyone made fun of WCW in 2000 for running Hulk Hogan vs. Ric Flair in a main event with a combined age of 100. Well WWE is now headlining a show in Australia with Undertaker (older now than Flair was then) and Triple H (older now than Hogan was then). Age and perspective are weird things. As for the match, the last few months have really taken the mystique off of Bate, who has lost every singles match he’s been in since he dropped the title. Dream has been killing it, though. Good match, too. Not mind blowing, but good. ***¼

William Regal serves Johnny Gargano his walking papers, but tells him that he’ll have to still wrestle on house shows that he was committed to. That’s pretty lame. I know it’d be crappy to take him off of house shows and keep that money from him, but they should have just made an announcement at the house shows rather than saying it on TV. Drake Younger, the referee for the match that ended Gargano’s career, says he made a mistake counting the pin and apologizes. It’s still so bizarre to me that CZW guys are on WWE TV, even as referees.

Adam Cole def. Cezar Bononi
Before the match, Cole points out that Bononi is the winner of the Future Star of NXT 2017 Award and invites him to join the Undisputed Era. While Bononi thinks about it, Cole attacks him. Bononi got a convincing near-fall here, but mostly got rolled. I’m always going to hate Bononi for beating Heavy Machinery for that award. **

Shayna Baszler def. Kairi Sane
This wasn’t as good as their arena match, but it wasn’t really meant to be. It was meant to build Baszler up as a killer while keeping Sane relatively strong, which it definitely accomplished. ***¼

Andrade Cien Almas and Zelina Vega come out to brag about putting down Gargano for a second time and putting him out of NXT. Vega cuts a solid promo, but then Almas gets on the mic and it’s cartoonish and impossible to understand. Just when it looks like they’re going to get away without incident, Amsterdam Black comes out. But then Killian Dain comes out too. The two potential contenders fight as the show goes off the air. That was an oddly structured segment.
