February 27, 2018 – Los Angeles, California
Cedric Alexander def. TJP {Quarterfinal Match}
There was nothing at all wrong with this match, technically. They were precise, consistent, and hard-hitting. But while I was never bored, I was never drawn in. The fact that down the stretch that Alexander’s expressed fatigue felt unearned and that the Lumbar Check felt like it came out of absolutely nowhere didn’t do the match any favors. Alexander won at 17:21. ***
Roderick Strong def. Kalisto {Quarterfinal Match}
This featured some nice innovation, including an avalanche bodyslam countered to a wild Frankensteiner. I’m finding that the matches that are a bit shorter are tighter and have a stronger structure to them. I’m a big fan. Strong won with the End of Heartache at 11:39 after a dope power vs. flight battle. ***¼
