Shayna Baszler def. Mercedes Martinez {Semifinal Match}
I don’t know if Martinez actually trained Baszler, but that’s how they’re playing it up here. Nice to see these ladies really laying it into each other here. Baszler releases the choke immediately after the bell to show that she’s close to Martinez. Annoyingly, Stephanie McMahon and Triple H come out to raise Baszler’s hand. Stephanie makes everything she’s associated with seem like it was planned at the last second. I’m having a hard time articulating what I mean, but it’s basically like when your boss decides last minute that he or she wants to be customer-facing because something big or good is happening, but then doesn’t remember what the actual job of someone customer-facing is. Does that make sense? Probably not. Also, couldn’t she and Sara Amato have worn flats so that the wrestlers in the tournament wouldn’t look so small? These are little things that do make a difference. ***
Kairi Sane def. Toni Storm {Semifinal Match}
Sane was in the main event of every show she appeared on, so there was no doubt she was going to the finals, and probably winning. This one got a lot of time. This was the only match in the tournament (so far) to have a really big match feel. There’s no way to watch this match and not be totally assured that Sane is winning the whole thing. She just fought like a little monster to win the thing. ***½
