Mae Young Classic: Season 1 – Episode 2

August 28, 2017 – Winter Park, Florida

Mercedes Martinez def. Xia Li {First Round Match}
This is Li’s first match ever. So yeah, clearly there were a lot of women on the indies and overseas who didn’t want this booking. Martinez does some super racist shit before the match, mocking a martial arts stance and wiping her hand off after shaking Li’s hand. One or the other of those things is being a dick, both is racist. Li impressively didn’t embarrass herself in her first match, but Martinez kind of did. Why was she running around the ring like a clown? What happened to her since the matches I saw of her kicking ass in SHIMMER when that company first started? *½

Rachel Evers def. Marti Belle {First Round Match}
Before the match, Evers talks about being Paul Ellering’s daughter, which is pretty cool. This match was bad and they should both feel bad about it. Christ. ½*

They show Shadia Bseiso and Kacy Catanzaro in the crowd and announce that they’re the newest NXT signees. Catanzaro doesn’t make her debut until a year later in this same tournament and Bseiso is a commentator now.

They show the 32 competitors in the Performance Center getting a pep talk from Triple H. I suppose this isn’t any worse than Dave Prazak running SHIMMER or Sal Hamaoui running SHINE. Both of those companies have female wrestling founders too but, whatever I guess.

Rhea Ripley def. Miranda Salinas {First Round Match}
Having seen Ripley perform in the 2018 tournament, it’s pretty jarring to see her as a plucky babyface here. This was solid, but very short. **¼

Mia Yim def. Sarah Logan {First Round Match}
That was fun. These ladies just kicked the crap out of each other, and the finish was dope as all get out. Yim is fighting Baszler in round 2, and if they give that some time it could be pretty damn good. ***¼
