August 9, 2017 – Winter Park, Florida
SAnitY comes to the ring and calls out the Authors of Pain. This time Eric Young rejoins his group to get the better of the tag champs.
Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford def. Chris Metro & JC Metro
The Metro Brothers is a bad gimmick. That is all. Mauro Ranallo says they look up to the Hart Foundation and the Brainbusters, but they’re a carbon copy of Deuce N’ Domino. I’m a little surprised that the Street Profits are able to get away with a sizzurp gimmick. I don’t review squashes, but this felt like something out of the ‘90s (not a compliment). N/A
Drew McIntyre & Bobby Roode come out to the ring flanked by William Regal and a lot of security. They trade barbs for a while. Then, Roderick Strong comes out and says he doesn’t even want another title shot, he just wants to fight Roode. Regal tries to get involved but both Strong and Roode have no time for him. Just like the first time around, Roode is mystifyingly mad enough to give Strong a title shot, but he has to beat McIntyre first, and then Strong can have a title shot after Brooklyn. Ah, so it’s so that Strong can soften up McIntyre before Takeover. Regal tries to puff up his chest again but McIntyre tells Regal to make the match. He’s not afraid to fight Strong and then Roode right after for the title. I’m back on board with this angle.
Danny Burch def. Oney Lorcan
This was a notch lower in intensity than their first match, but it was as long as it needed to be and told a better story. After the match, Burch asks for a handshake. Lorcan teases walking out, but changes his mind. Burch opens the ropes for him. These guys are great. ***¼
Andrade Cien Almas def. No Way Jose
This was less a match and more a transformation for Almas from silly party guy to aggressive heel at Zeilna Vega’s insistence. The whole thing made Jose look like a huge chump, but Almas has a better upside so that’s fine. After the match, Vega accepts the open challenge that Johnny Gargano put out for Takeover on Almas’s behalf. This was super weird to feature as a main event, especially given how satisfying the previous segment was. *½
Because the Cruiserweight Championship is now an NXT title and I’m reviewing every title defense of the WWE/NXT Cruiserweight Championship and post them on the NXT TV reviews that preceded them, here’s the title defense from the 1,241st episode of Raw.
August 14, 2017 – Boston, Massachusetts
Akira Tozawa def. Neville {WWE Cruiserweight Championship Match}
These two had a match booked for the following Sunday at SummerSlam (he’d beaten Ariya Daivari to earn the shot), but Titus O’Neil convinced General Manager Kurt Angle that Boston was a big enough town to place host to Neville’s title defense. Tozawa won the title at 8:24 (shown) with the diving senton. Look, this match featured a double Super Jump and a super duperplex, so I can only be so mad at the fact that it was all sizzle and no steak. I liked the sizzle! ***¼
