NXT 391

May 10, 2017 – Winter Park, Florida

Amsterdam Black def. Cezar Bononi
I don’t review squashes. N/A

It turns out that Ember Moon’s spill from the ring was pretty bad (it looked really bad) and she’ll be out of action for a month. The Takeover match is now a triple threat match. Also at Takeover, Pete Dunne earned a UK title shot on the back of a win on a house show in the UK or something. They show hype videos for Dunne and Ruby Riott to get us ready for those matches. They also try to interview Nikki Cross but she’s still crazy.

Drew McIntyre, who is back in NXT after being gone for over five years, is disappointed that he’s not in the NXT Championship mix. Wesley Blake of all people, who has been off TV for seven months, thinks McIntyre should just leave.

Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano def. Tino Sabbatelli & Riddick Moss
This was pretty pedestrian by DIY standards. After the match, William Regal grants a tag title match to DIY at Takeover. The Authors of Pain come out and Paul Ellering threatens to end their careers. Regal lets Ellering know that it’s going to be a ladder match. Heavy Machinery really got shafted here. **

Hideo Itami def. Roderick Strong {Number One Contender’s Match}
These two first wrestled 11 years earlier in Ring of Honor, and a few times since then. I’ve only seen that first match. It was good but missing a connection with the crowd. Now I wonder what they can do with over a decade of experience under their belts. This had a more engaged crowd and very similar action. I’d say it’s about on par, though with better selling and fewer scary strikes. ***½
