April 19, 2017 – Winter Park, Florida
The crappy opening music has already been replaced with the song that lives on to present day. Feels like I’m almost caught up! Only a year and change-worth of shows to go!
Bobby Roode starts the show, gloating about chasing Shinsuke Nakamura out of NXT and noting that the whole roster saw Nakamura off except for him. Hideo Itami interrupts and slaps Roode without saying a word. Roode gets ready to fight, but Itami casually hits him with the Go2Sleep and makes it clear that he wants the title. They really sell the move by having Roode recover only after a commercial break.
Andrade Cien Almas def. Danny Burch
Earlier in the day, Almas was talking trash to Drew McIntyre at the Performance Center while Heavy Machinery looked on, and it was implied that he’d done some day clubbing. Then Almas more or less dominated here, so what’s meant to be the issue with his partying? **
Liv Morgan & Aliyah def. Billie Kay & Royce Da 5’7
Oy, this division needs a refresh. This was mostly not awful, but Aliyah forgot to kick out at one point and the crowd turned on the thing. And that’s weird, because Aliyah was booked to get the winning pin. So what was she confused about? *
Tye Dillinger def. Eric Young {Steel Cage Match}
There was a weird thing going on here where the cage door was locked from the outside, but anytime a wrestler (in this case it was Young) wanted it opened, a referee unlocked it for him. So if the lock is on the outside it’s not meant to keep wrestlers out, and if a wrestler’s request to have it opened is always granted, why have it? Well, this match sort of has the answer. First they brawl for a while. Young, nice and bloodied up, hits Dillinger with an elbowdrop off the top of the cage and they, get this, sell the damn thing. Then Dillinger hits the Tye breaker and they, get this, sell the damn thing. Then Dillinger tries to escape through the door but SAnitY comes out and locks it on him. Awesome shot of that moment. Then Dillinger’s posse comes out to fight SAnitY. Then Dillinger creatively finds ways to keep Killian Dain and Alexander Wolfe from getting in the cage. Then Wolfe keeps Dillinger from climbing out over the top, so he turns around and hits a crossbody off the top of the cage onto Young and Dain. Then with the rest of SAnitY climbing into the cage like it’s a goddamn zombie movie, Dillinger escapes through the door and locks them in from the outside, then celebrates with his friends. I think this is a CRIMINALLY underrated match in NXT’s history, and on top of being a beautifully booked (and beautifully overbooked) match, it provided a feel good blow off to a feud that we actually don’t get a ton in pro wrestling anymore. ****
