NXT 387

April 12, 2017 – Winter Park, Florida

NXT enters stage three post-reboot, with a darker, grittier opening theme and look.

Amsterdam Black def. Corey Hollis
I don’t review squashes, and Black won this in one move with his hands behind his back. N/A

Tye Dillinger has debuted on Smackdown Live, but he has one more thing he wants to do in NXT. He’ll face Eric Young in a steel cage next week, so SAnitY will have a hard time interfering. I’m just excited for the term “numbers game” to be used less. Shinsuke Nakamura has also popped up on SDL, so his farewell address will be tonight’s main event.

Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa def. Michael Blaze & Dylan Miley
Miley will become Lars Sullivan and he looks ridiculous in the babyface jobber role. He actually got to dominate a bit after the opening cutesy handshake. Then Blaze comes in and it becomes a typical squash. Points for Miley not being made to look like a chump, aside from not being able to save his partner. After the match, Miley turns heel and beats the crap out of Blaze. That’s a pretty big relief, actually. *

Ruby Riott def. Kimberly Frankele
These two have had a LOT of history against each other on the indies. This was pretty much a squash, with Nikki Cross watching from ringside. N/A

Drew McIntyre def. Oney Lorcan
Jesus, this turned into a brutal, if one-sided fight. McIntyre is a big big boy and he can do some very cool things in the ring. Lorcan got his face opened up during this thing, and I feel a little bad saying that this was a blast to watch. Hell of a way to make the most of five minutes. ***¼

Nakamura caps the show with a farewell speech. He does the whole thing in english and it’s not bad, all things considering. Then the roster (including Hideo Itami front and center, and Finn Balor as a surprise) comes out on the ramp to clap for him. How do they decide who gets these ceremonies? Samoa Joe didn’t get one, perhaps because he was a heel? Tye Dillinger likely won’t next week. Is it because he was never champion? Balor sort of got one (it was interrupted by Nakamura but then Balor got to have a big farewell match), so maybe just babyface champions get them, though Neville never really did. It’s mysterious. I like these more than I like contract signings, but there are way more contract signings.
