NXT Takeover: San Antonio

I watched the Takeover specials before I watched the TV show. So I’m going to add notes to my original reviews now that I have the full context. I’ll put them in red.

January 28, 2017 – San Antonio, Texas

Eric Young def. Tye Dillinger
SAnitY is supposedly inspired by Triple H’s fandom of the awful movie Smokin Aces, and the faction in that movie they most resemble is the neo nazis. I’m not calling Triple H a nazi, but he does seem to follow in Lemmy’s footsteps in terms of nazi memorabilia collection. Again, not calling Triple H a nazi, but I am starting to hear some faint quacks. Anyway, this was pretty damn good, and I’d be curious to see where the storyline (in which Young is trying to recruit Dillinger) goes from here. ***¼ The place it goes is Dillinger continuing to lose in every single big match for his entire career.

Roderick Strong def. Andrade Cien Almas
Strong won the match with the Sick Kick, which is a move name that I coined and I marked out big time to hear the commentators say it. The match was a good showcase for both guys. Though I think it suffered a bit by being compared to Aries vs. Nakamura by the commentators. ***½ Almas was always good, but it took getting a manager to make him great.

Akam & Rezar def. Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
When this match happened I recall people being really upset at the decision, but let’s be real that match was so dope. DIY are essentially the Ric Flair of tag teams, pulling great matches out of everyone including the Can-Albania Connection. Just a great tag team version of Flair vs. Vader, for example. **** I wish I wasn’t so prone to comparing things to Flair vs. Vader or Sting vs. Vader, but the Authors of Pain are shockingly good given how boring their general gimmick and how boring past big-guy tag teams have been, so I just get a little excited I guess.

Asuka def. Nikki Cross vs. Billie Kay vs. Peyton Royce {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
Wow, that was… um… bad. There were huge stretches where nothing happened, the action was totally disjointed and messy, and frankly Asuka should have just bulldozed everyone from the beginning. *½ Or she could have just faced Nikki Cross in a singles match, which is all the fans cared about and all I personally wanted to see.

Bobby Roode def. Shinsuke Nakamura {NXT Championship Match}
So can Shinsuke put on a bigger spectacle with Roode than he did with Joe in the disappointing matches in Osaka and Melbourne? No, of course not, because Roode isn’t good enough for this top spot on the card. And someone involved in the booking must agree, because the match-stopping injury angle is the only way they could credibly move the belt to him. I guess we’re in for a stretch of shows with mediocre main events. Sidenote: Corey Graves clearly loves Game of Thrones and I already miss him on commentary. **¾ My love for Graves was tempered by his less-than-stellar commentary on the weekly show compared to Takeover, and also I hadn’t been exposed to the glory of Mauro Ranallo yet. Roode is still a snooze but thankfully this turned out to be the worst of his Takeover main events and the rest were a little better from here.
