NXT in Osaka

This is the year-end episode, and before I get to what’s going on here, I just want to look back fondly on past year-end/year-beginning episodes of this program, which typically featured a single match:

2012: Cody Rhodes vs. Kane, when NXT still really didn’t know what it was.
2013: William Regal vs. Cesaro, in Regal’s last ever match.
2014: Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks, the first time NXT showed confidence the ladies could carry things.
2015: Adrian Neville vs. Cesaro, a match to help them shill a DVD
2015b: Technically the first show of 2016, Tye Dillinger vs. Apollo Crews, a match in the mostly empty AT&T Stadium to hype WrestleMania tickets going on sale.

This year, 2016 and 2016b are house shows from Osaka and Melbourne. The Samoa Joe vs. Shinsuke Nakamura matches from both shows have aired in shortened forms on previous episodes, but NXT decided to give us full cards this year, rather than just one match. Awful thoughtful of them.

December 3, 2016 – Osaka, Osaka

Oney Lorcan def Andrade Cien Almas
The commentators kept hammering that Japan is Almas’s backyard, but he didn’t seem to know how to work a Japanese crowd. They were silent, and the first half of the match was a huge drag as a result. They picked things up well enough in the second half though. I was surprised to see Lorgan win. **¾

Billie Kay & Peyton Royce def. Liv Morgan & Aliyah
That finish was pretty rough, but everything leading up to it was pretty decent. The fact that 3 of these ladies are on the main roster now kind of blows my mind given some of the other female talent. **¼

Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa def. Akira Tozawa & TAJIRI {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
If you’re curious about Tozawa, I wrote a whole mess of books about his time in Dragon Gate. This was easily the best match of the night, which was an unfortunate low bar to jump. The final stretch was a lot of fun, but like many marquee show NXT matches, it didn’t need the first five minutes. ***½

Asuka def. Nia Jax {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
Jax making fun of the annoying Japanese fans who shout out names was my favorite thing on this show. This match was a disaster. There were a few spots that were cool in principle, but in execution everything here was a mess. Jax was on a different planet, completely blown up. Are there real Nia Jax fans? *

Shinsuke Nakamura def. Samoa Joe {NXT Championship Match}
I’d mentioned that I had hopes that a Nakamura vs. Samoa Joe rubber match would outdo their previous matches. Well it really didn’t. A weird crowd (who even are Japanese NXT/WWE fans?) and a general house-show vibe meant it was quite a bit weaker than their previous matches. ***
