November 2, 2016 – San Jose, California
Shane Thorne def. Roderick Strong {Quarterfinal Match}
Austin Aries got injured in a house show match against Shinsuke Nakamura, so William Regal decided that this quarterfinal match would be decided between Strong & Thorne. Better than nothing, I guess. Strong had this thing pretty well in hand, but when he and Aries started trying to get up to a few nefarious tricks Thorne was able to capitalize and get a roll up victory. That’s after they beat each other up for a good little while, which I’d say is a good make up for a tag match folks were looking forward to. ***¼
November 2, 2016 – Winter Park, Florida
Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa def. Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson {Quarterfinal Match}
Another quarterfinal match isn’t happening, as Dawson comes out on crutches and forfeits the match. DIY moves on to the next round.
Remember when Andrade Cien Almas turned on Cedric Alexander over a month ago? Alexander remembers, and he wants to fight Almas again, anytime, anywhere.
Akam & Rezar def. Rich Swann & No Way Jose {Quarterfinal Match}
This match is happening back in San Jose. Something that negatively impacted this match and the singles match was that the ring in San Jose isn’t mic’d at all, so moves that would normally look brutal come off as softer. It’s pretty weird to me that the Authors of Pain are so consistently solid in the ring. They just very much understand what their role is and they play it very well. Jose and Swann are always a treat as well. Now if only some sound had come out of the ring! ***
Sawyer Fulton & Alexander Wolfe def. Kota Ibushi & TJ Perkins {Quarterfinal Match}
And we wrap up the show and this round of the tournament back at Full Sail. This had a very deflating finish, but the clash of styles between the two teams didn’t stop them from putting on a solid match. I can’t imagine a SAnitY vs. Authors of Pain finals would be well-received, so I’m curious how the rest of the tournament is booked. ***
