NXT 344

July 13, 2016 – Winter Park, Florida

Samoa Joe kicks off the show. He’s insulted by the implications of the main event tonight. He doesn’t want Finn Balor or Shinsuke Nakamura are competing in a number one contender’s match tonight. Balor won’t be winning and then triumphantly getting the title back. Nakamura won’t be riding the momentum of a win tonight into a title win shortly thereafter. Rhyno comes out and is probably just excited to be in the ring with some that’s the same proportions as him. He wants the title. Joe walks out on him.

Next week is going to be another big show. Bayley vs. Nappa Jax, American Alpha vs. the Authors of Pain, and Joe vs. Rhyno.

They pretty much do away with the pretense that there will be other matches on this show (like they did with the Joe vs. Sami Zayn match) and come out and say that the only feature tonight is Balor vs. Nakamura. During the build, they’d mentioned wrestling each other before, so I tracked down the only other singles match they’ve had. It was two years ago at the New Japan Cup in the quarterfinals. Nakamura won in ten minutes and it’s roughly a *** affair. I’d watched it for context, but I have a feeling that in this match, Balor won’t be a heel relying on chair shots to the leg and Bullet Club interference to control the whole match before Nakamura wins suddenly after hitting his finisher twice.

Shinsuke Nakamura def. Finn Balor
Like a lot of Takeover main events, this actually felt too long and maybe a little overhyped. I mean, they were hyping this as potentially the greatest match in the brand’s history so that was always going to be hard to live up to. But I just wasn’t really feeling this. I respect the hard work they put into this, and it was never boring, but it didn’t come together as a classic. The leg work, which was the most interesting stuff that Balor did in the match, didn’t even garner him a near fall when he went back to it in the final stretch. Hard work and good action counts for a lot, and this was a nice graduation match for Balor, but it probably wasn’t worthy of all the build and pomp surrounding it. Hot take: both of these guys are a little overrated. ***¾
