So Coronavirus is the worst and I’m already getting a little tippy in my teacups just a couple days into social distancing. One bright side is that some media companies are releasing content early (Frozen II on Disney+) or putting out never before seen content, like this dark match. I started reviewing EVOLVE with the show after this, when Fabian Aichner won the championship and ushered in the very public era of EVOLVE and WWE working together. Whereas we’d eventually get to EVOLVE shows featuring a majority of matches with NXT-contracted wrestlers, this was the tail-end of an era when WWE would send someone from NXT but ask EVOLVE not to air the match on WWNLive. So, yeah, COVID-19 gave us this match winding up on YouTube, and will hopefully give us Velveteen Dream vs. Austin Theory as well as Adam Cole vs. WALTER. Fingers crossed.
Velveteen Dream def. Darby Allin
The opening moments of this match were funny, as Dream stalled and jaw-jacked about wrestling for Vince McMahon while Allin wrestles for EVOLVE. With a year of hindsight (and a change in Allin’s career) that’s kind of a trip to see. I really liked Allin being all over Dream when Dream tried to stall on the outside, and that his exuberance wound up costing him as soon as they got back in the ring. Sometimes a measured approach works better. Dream heeled it up beautifully here, teasing and then refusing to do high spots and wiping Allin’s face paint off. Despite having lost to Dream the night before, Theory came out and interfered on Dream’s behalf because Allin had messed with Theory’s game earlier on this show, I guess. That led to Allin hitting both of them with a big Coffin Drop, which was more or less no-sold by Theory who distracted the referee from an Allin pin. Dream came back with the Purple Rainmaker for the win at 16:10. That was way too much nonsense for a dark match, and I bet in hindsight they wish they hadn’t done so much to protect Allin from taking a squeaky clean pin from Dream. ***½
