Rich Swann def. Jason Lee {First Round Match}
This was pretty much a squash for Swann. Lee was praised for his speed, and he has since parlayed that into a career in Dragon Gate. Swann won with the standing 450 Splash at 3:47. *¾
Noam Dar def. Gurv Sihra {First Round Match}
Dar won with the Champagne Super Kneebar at 5:26. The action in this was solid, but neither guy connected with the crowd at all and that took a lot of the juice out of this thing. **¼
Jack Gallagher def. Fabian Aichner {First Round Match}
Aichner’s Imperium membership is teased here as his strong connection to Germany is highlighted. This was dope. Both guys secured their WWE careers with this match. Gallagher in particular was able to fully show the range of his skills, from chain wrestling to hard striking, and Aichner was a fantastic foil for him. Gallagher won in 6:45 with a gnarly dropkick in the corner. I’m very happy that both guys are still in WWE today. ***¼
Johnny Gargano def. Tommaso Ciampa {First Round Match}
Despite being tag partners in NXT at the time, these Ciampa threatened to hurt Gargano here. This match was quite good; we know these two have great chemistry. But what I wasn’t expecting was that this match would make me appreciate their 2018 Takeover trilogy even more. There’s a moment in which Ciampa decides not to hit Gargano with an unprotected knee strike and pays for it. Then later he goes for an unprotected roaring elbow and that rage-fueled decision pretty much cost him the match. Gargano won with a crucifix pin in 10:47. The parallels between that and the more current matches make me feel so gloriously geeky about wrestling. After the match, Ciampa teases walking out on Gargano, but then sits next to him and gives him a hug in ANOTHER parallel to their matches in 2018! ***½
