NXT Takeover The End

I watched the Takeover specials before I watched the TV show. So I’m going to add notes to my original reviews now that I have the full context. I’ll put them in red.

June 8, 2016 – Winter Park, Florida

I’ve heard rumors that this was going to be the last Takeover special and that’s where the name come from, but I think that’s confusion over the fact that this turned out to just be the last Takeover held at Full Sail, as the rest precede big WWE PPVs.

Andrade Cien Almas def. Tye Dillinger
It’s been 4 or 5 Takeovers since Dillinger has made an appearance, so I’m once again surprised that he got so much offense in. Both guys looked good, but they should have just let Almas squash Dillinger (just like Crews should have squashed him months ago) and been realistic about the fact that Dillinger is never getting a serious chance in this company. **½ Now having watched the weekly show, it’s wild to see that some people are in NXT as a regular for a while and never make it onto the Takeover specials. Elias Samson, for one. Dillinger actually was pretty over, and it’s kind of surprising that he was never treated as more than a JTTS.

Dash Wilder & Scott Dawson def. Chad Gable & Jason Jordan {NXT Tag Team Championship Match}
Yes! Just let these two teams fight each other forever. This was more of the same amazing tag team fun and attention to detail that we saw from these guys on the last Takeover. Give them a 2-out-of-3 falls match and the main event and I’ll be happy. I’d go higher with my rating if not for a little cutesy putesy over-choreographed stuff in the beginning. ****½ They actually do have a 2/3 falls match in a few weeks and I’m super stoked to get to it.

Shinsuke Nakamura def. Austin Aries
The weirdest thing about these two guys fighting in a WWE ring isn’t that they both got famous elsewhere, it’s that they’re both old as hell to be in a farm league (Aries was 38 when this match happened). Like, remember when everyone thought Batista was old when he debuted? Basically everyone who is big in NXT at this point is older than Batista was post-developmental. Anyway, I liked watching these two old farts (who are just a few years older than me) fight even more than I liked Nakamura vs. Zayn. Aries’ super stiff style complimented Nakamura’s looser flow more than Zayn’s wacky offense did, making this feel like more of a real fight. ****¼ I think this is probably the best match either guy had in NXT, and maybe WWE. Feel free to correct me. I also still think this should have officially been a number one contender’s match.

Asuka def. Nia Jax {NXT Women’s Championship Match}
Jax’s style here was really interesting to me. She didn’t really sell, which is good because she’s supposed to be this unstoppable monster. But her facial expressions don’t show a lot of menace. That’s really the only thing that’s missing and was the only thing keeping this from being really outstanding. As it was, still pretty damn good. ***½ I wish Jax could just be a nasty heel, rather than feeling like she’s just playing at one. She clearly has natural talent, and hopefully more time and craft will help her sharpen it.

Samoa Joe def. Finn Balor {NXT Championship Steel Cage Match}
I loved how much they utilized the cage in this match. It felt a lot more like an old-school cage match than most of the puffy WWE cage matches that we’ve gotten in the last 20 years. It also reminded a bit of Joe’s amazing cage match against Jay Briscoe from like 12 years before this. My favorite bit is that there were almost no instances of either guy trying to do something fancy when trying to win would have made more sense. ****¼ That’s also the reason I liked Balor’s ladder match more than most. These things should be about utilizing the cage to win, not to just pop the crowd.
