January 1, 2015 – Winter Park, Florida
Sin Cara & Kalisto def. Jason Jordan & Tye Dillinger
The joke about Jordan & Dillinger is that the only thing that makes them a tag team is their matching tights. This was the typical solid Lucha Dragons match. Afterwards, the Vaudevillains attack the Dragons. **½
Bull Dempsey and CJ Parker have a nonsensical conversation about Parker’s upcoming match with Baron Corbin. This pretty much ruined Dempsey’s mystique.
Blue Pants def. Carmella
How did these three Jersey lunks stay over when their entrance was mind-numbingly repetitive. Even Pants is becoming a redundant part of this sideshow. Renee Young says the quiet part out loud, “I don’t know what’s happening right now.” Neither does anyone watching, Renee. Also confusing, the references to Blue’s Clues and the Kitty Pryde. Enzo Amore gets excited and distracts Carmella, leading to a fluke roll up from Pants. We get it, Carmella and Enzo are bad for each other. The one good thing to come out of this is we find out that Pants’s entrance music is recording of Big Cass singing the Price is Right theme music, and not just him on the mic. N/A
Baron Corbin def. CJ Parker
Corbin wins in 34 seconds, according to the crowd. Dempsey is in the crowd, so Corbin calls him out. They brawl until the refs break it up. N/A
William Regal announces that Sami Zayn will return next week, and Curtis Axel will return to NXT to face Hideo Itami. Axel is appreciative.
Charlotte comes out and puts the kibosh on a chant supportive of Blue Pants getting a title shot. Before she can say more, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch come out and threaten her, but Natalya backs her up. And that’s it? Nothing happens? I mean it’s clearly setting up a tag match but that was the most awkward, ineffective segment I can imagine to get there. Who writes this crap?
Hideo Itami & Finn Balor def. Konnor & Viktor
The commentators try to sell the Ascension as regulars in the main event of NXT, but even if you account for every iteration of the team and Konnor’s singles run, they’ve been in main event segments only 10% of the time despite having been around without interruption since the reboot. This had a stronger start and finish than the Takeover match, but holy shit was the Ascensions loooong control segment boring. But on the bright side, this wrapped up the Ascension’s run as regulars in NXT, as they appeared only sporadically after this to put over other teams. **½
