I watched the Takeover specials before I watched the TV show. So I’m going to add notes to my original reviews now that I have the full context. I’ll put them in red.
September 11, 2014 – Winter Park, Florida
Kalisto & Sin Cara def. Konnor & Viktor [NXT Tag Team Championship Match] Kalisto is a lot of fun when he’s not saddled with fatty Local. Sin Cara and the Ascension didn’t do much for me, but Kalisto’s stuff and the end of the baffling Ascension title reign make me happy. **¼ Thank god our national nightmare is over.
Baron Corbin def. CJ Parker
I don’t care for squashes on major shows. ½* Trying to get Baron Corbin over as a big badass is even more preposterous now that I’ve seen him as a jobber so many times. And like Bull Dempsey (who he’ll feud with) he wasn’t even repackaged to help us suspend disbelief.
Enzo Amore def. Sylvester Lefort [Hair vs. Hair Match] Cass and Enzo was such an indy garbage gimmick that I can’t believe it got over, and it surprises me zero how badly it turned out for them. The match was boring and dumb and so uneventful that I had to focus on the terrible commentary. * If I’m being honest, I don’t mind Enzo and Cass’s backstage stuff. But once their music hits it’s torture.
KENTA comes out for the first time in NXT. For as disappointing as Hideo Itami has been in WWE, it’s still surreal to see him debuting under his ring name KENTA in NXT. Then he changes his name to Hideo Itami in a nonsensical move, even in-storyline, so that’s a drag. But then he gets to beat up the Ascension and look pretty cool in the process, so there’s that. Oh god, more Ascension.
Bull Dempsey def. Mojo Rawley
I was ready to type how stupid it was that this match was a squash that was built up with a squash, but then it was about as fun of a squash as I’ve seen in a long, long time. *½ I feel dirty that I had positive feelings about this match, because I’m tuned out on guys ever so much.
Charlotte def. Bayley [NXT Women’s Championship Match] The guys need to really step it up, because the girls are outperforming them. Some really innovative stuff here, including a head scissors that remained interesting for minutes at a time because Charlotte and Bayley kept it relevant and inventive. **** If only the booking around this division could be as consistent as their matches on Takeovers.
Adrian Neville def. Tyler Breeze, Sami Zayn & Tyson Kidd [NXT Championship Match] I’m starting to feel like the shadow of Zayn vs. Cesaro hangs over the entire NXT championship scene. That is to say, people are getting too excited about moves and sequences that were innovative on the indies in the mid ‘00s, and seem rather disjointed in this setting. Yeah, it’s cool to see Zayn get fired up and hit his movez, but why do we have to sit through ten minutes of unrelated action before that? The match had a few stories to tell: 1) that Neville is overconfident in taking on three previously-dispatched challengers at once, 2) that Neville and Zayn’s friendship is being strained by Neville’s resentment and opportunism and the crowd’s love of Zayn’s and his ambition, and 3) that Breeze and Kidd are going to try to isolate Neville and Zayn, so they’d better get on the same page. Zayn’s underdog bit could totally work to enhance all three, but it comes and goes. And the thing that’s most frustrating to me is that this could be fixed simply by cutting five minutes out of the match. That said the finish ruled, so points for that. ***½ Technically Neville didn’t beat Zayn in a singles match for the title, but he did beat him to become the number one contender and then win the title. I still think this match is overrated by most.
