NXT 153

January 23, 2012 – Winter Park, Florida

NXT knows how to build to a tag tournament, because watching the last show I wanted tag titles and this show starts with Shawn Michaels announcing just that.

Erick Rowan & Luke Harper def. Yoshi Tatsu & Percy Watson [Quarterfinal Match]
I’m just happy that Tatsu and Watson have tagged before on NXT TV. This was quite a bit better than I was ready for it to be. Rowan is a snooze, but everyone else, especially the babyfaces, really lit it up considering what they were given here. I don’t think we’ll see much more of Tatsu and Watson as a team, but I wouldn’t be mad if we did. **½

Backstage, Corey Graves is pissed that he’s not in the tag team tournament. He also wants another match for the NXT Championship because his ended in a DQ. Dusty Rhodes didn’t put Graves in the tournament because nobody wanted to be his partner, even Jake Carter. That’s random, and a really lame way to get to Dusty booking Graves vs. Carter.

Sasha Banks def. Alicia Fox
Unlike the opener, I was expecting something good out of this, and it delivered. These ladies really laid into each other, and I’d really like to see a longer match between the two. ***

It looks like Kenneth Cameron is out of NXT, as Conor O’Brian gets an Ascension promo video on his own, which is somehow even dumber than when they Flair were together. I guess Cameron got fired for a DUI and then later hitting a police officer. Charlotte married that guy after all that. Also, they never pulled the trigger on wrapping up the Usos feud, so that’s a lesson in better planning.

Corey Graves def. Jake Carter
This was fine. Carter is clearly going nowhere. Can we just do Graves vs. Langston ASAP so Big E can stop having the same old squash every week? **

We finally get an explanation for Michael McGillicutty’s face turn when Bo Dallas straight up asks him about it. McGillicutty basically said being a dick wasn’t working for him so he made a New Year’s resolution to be a better person. They get a rematch with the Colons in the tournament. A weird explanation is better than no explanation.

Adrian Neville & Oliver Grey def. Heath Slater & Drew McIntyre [Quarterfinal Match]
Grey is the beneficiary of some really amazing timing here, as a celebrated British wrestler’s debut coupled with a tag tournament gets him out of jobber-for-life status. Solid stuff here, as Grey got to show that he’s a steady hand, Neville got to look like a star, and 3MB helped with all that. ***¼

Big E. Langston def. Axl Keegan
Sure, just waste your champion on squashes. He’s the champion, we don’t need to be doing this anymore! Conor O’Brian interrupts (via the big screen) Langston’s 5 count routine to challenge for the title. Dammit. N/A
