Brodus Clay def. Camacho
Sigh, I’m starting to lose steam with NXT. This was exactly what you’d think a match between these two focused more on Clay would be. ½*
Trent Barreta def. Kassius Ohno
Before the match, Richie Steamboat announces that he got injured last week and needs time to recover. Ohno tells him he should just retire (that ends up being a relatively dark and prescient promo). Instead, Steamboat distracts Ohno to give Barreta the win after a decent enough match. Baretta’s music is dope. **½
Alicia Fox & Layla def. Paige & Audrey Marie
Regal makes a big deal out of the possibility of Paige and Marie’s prospects if they win, but Paig I believe is undefeated in women’s tag matches since the reboot. Anyway that’s irrrelevant because the whole match was an excuse to cause dissention between Paige and Marie, and the execution Marie’s selfishness leading to the loss was really poor. *
Bronson def. Lincoln Broderick
Bronson’s promo video was a little… rapey? Broderick looks like a human steroid injection. Bronson has some unique offense, and I’d be curious to see him in a real match, but that will never happen because he got a spine injury right after this and left wrestling for years and WWE forever. *
Antonio Cesaro, now WWE United States Champion, cuts a promo in the ring. He baits some of the audience rising for the National Anthem, then asks that the Swiss anthem be played. Tyson Kidd’s music plays instead and they go back and forth and brawl for a bit to hype their inevitable title match.
Seth Rollins def. Heath Slater
Vicky Guerrero convinced Dusty Rhodes to make this non-title match, which will earn Slater a title shot if he wins. Was Guerrero associated with Slater on WWE TV at all? I really dig the evolution of Rollins converting a Contra Code to something more unique to himself. This was quite good by NXT in 2012 standards, with a finish that and the crowd on their feet. But if Rollins was winning anyway, why not make this a title match? ***½
