NXT 72

July 5, 2011 – Tucson, Arizona

The show starts with the rookies in the ring. There is no explanation for why Derrick Bateman was brought onto the show. Titus O’Neil wins a promo challenge.

Todd Grisham says that their match last week was, “bordering on five stars.” I know you’re starved for good wrestling on this show but let’s not lose our minds here, Grisham. This was fun, but didn’t have the near-fall drama that the last match had. Still, it’s in the top percentile of matches in this show’s history. That’s more an indictment of NXT than it is praise for the match. ***

Hornswoggle tries to give Maryse a bouquet of disgusting flowers, but she smashes them against his head. O’Neil tells him he should move on. O’Neil is right; she’s rejected him a few times and now he’s just harassing her. Plus she sucks.

There’s a fascinating moment on commentary wherein William Regal starts asking who it was that brought Bateman back, and Todd Grisham tries in his vanilla, diplomatic way to get Regal to shut up because that’s clearly not part of the angle. This was a decent little tag match, though Bryan was in it so how bad could it have been? **¼

The show ends with a Raw recap. CM Punk did his pipe bomb promo the week before and they replayed Vince McMahon’s response here.
