NXT 44

December 21, 2010 – San Antonio, Texas

The show starts with the wheelbarrow race. The Swagger Soaring Eagle is in the wheelbarrow. Todd Grisham tries to crap on this, but Josh Matthews isn’t having it. I’m going to call that out every single time it happens because it shows how much this company hated women. Derrick Bateman wins the challenge.

Jacob Novak def. Johnny Curtis
JTG is replacing R-Truth as Curtis’s pro tonight, as if that matters. 50/50 booking in NXT seems really unnecessary. This was bad, as Novak was in control for most if it. Ziggler interfered here, leading to Novak’s big boot and victory. Real bad. ¾*

Daniel Bryan is still having trouble getting Derrick Bateman to buckle down and train. He wants to teach him out to bridge properly, but Bateman is more concerned with winning the challenges. I really like these segments; there’s something sweet about them. And then Bateman does win the challenge.

Conor O’Brian tells Alberto Del Rio that he’s learned a lot from him. This version of O’Brian is so weird and makes me retroactively confused by his Ascension gimmick. How do you go from pretending to be a rat to being a vague gargoyle character?

Byron Saxton, Natalya & Chris Masters def. Brodus Clay, Maryse & Ted DiBiase
This was going along fine until the awkward transition to the finish, which even the commentators were confused about. **
