NXT 18

June 22, 2010 – Manchester, New Hampshire

Matt Striker has been replaced by the very attractive Ashley Valence. Between the solid matches last week and this massive improvement, maybe I can get behind this show after all.

The Miz & Alex Riley def. MVP & Percy Watson
Solid stuff, though the tag team aspect of the match was more or less a non-factor. Watson was fun in this small dose. **

Michael McGillicutty def. Titus O’Neil
Welp, that was a disaster. Two minutes of botched spots and awkward movements. ¼*

Eli Cottonwood def. Kaval
These two look ridiculous standing next to each other. The problem with Cottonwood is that while he’s tall as all hell, he doesn’t actually seem to be that strong. Kaval tried here, and there were a couple cool big man-little man spots, but Cottonwood’s inverted chokeslam is about the dumbest move I’ve ever seen and it’s hard to think about anything else. *½

Last week, the NXT season 1 rookies attacked Bret Hart (who I think was GM for the week) and demanded WWE contracts for the lot of them. Yesterday, they attacked Vince McMahon. Nobody makes the save and McMahon lays unconscious in the ring for a comically long time. It was so long that a cameraman is the one who checks on him. So awkward.

Cody Rhodes def. Lucky Cannon
Rhodes insists he can beat Cannon in under five minutes, so they put a timer on the screen. This started as a punch and kick-fest, but then the kicks got kind of creative. Rhodes won in just under four minutes. **

They all cut promos to close the show, but only Cottonwood saying the quiet part out loud is interesting, “None of this matters.” Husky Harris attacks Matt Striker, just like his pro did last week. Well, it made me smile.
