WWE ECW 88

February 12, 2008 – Houston, Texas

The show started with Chavo Guerrero coming out, pissed that he got dunked in the Gulf of Mexico and looking like he contracted a disease in the water. He claimed he’d defend his title against CM Punk tonight. But the Armando Estrada wouldn’t let him wrestle tonight, and he books Punk against Mark Henry instead.

Stevie Richards def. Rory Fox
Holy shit, Special Delivery Fox! You’d think that MTV spotlight would have gotten him more fame, but here he was jobbing out to Richards of all people nine years later. N/A

Kelly Kelly def. Layla
Kelly was really over in Houston. Layla’s work was very cartoonish, but I have to say this was another week in which the Kelly match wasn’t particularly bad. This was one was a bit more boring than the last two weeks’ matches were, but once again they got through it looking like they pretty much knew what they were doing. It’s a sad state of affairs when week after week Kelly Kelly’s progression is the most interesting part of the show. **

Kofi Kingston def. Mike Knox
Knox didn’t get an entrance here. It was nice to see Kingston have to overcome a challenge for a change; it gave the flips and kicks a bit of meaning, even if the outcome wasn’t in question. **

Tommy Dreamer def. John Morrison
These two just didn’t have any chemistry. This was the same exact match as last time, just with Dreamer reversing Morrison’s finisher into his DDT. So boring. Miz & Morrison beat up Dreamer & Colin Delaney after the match, so it didn’t even matter that Dreamer won. *

CM Punk def. Mark Henry
The match barely got started when Henry got disqualified for not letting go of a hold in the ropes for too long. Why even have it be Henry then? Punk could have faced literally anyone and they could have done that two minute segment. Guerrero attacks Punk after the match but gets laid out with the GTS. Henry doesn’t factor in. What a joke. ½*

Okay, let’s get this PPV match out of the way and put this feud out of its misery (just kidding this feud will never die).

February 17, 2008 – Las Vegas, Nevada

Chavo Guerrero def. CM Punk {ECW Championship Match}
Punk is known for doing things that he’s physically incapable of doing in the ring (his crappy moonsault, his MMA career), and here he did it by trying to do the Three Amigos and having to be very visibly carried through it by Guerrero. Other than that, this match was fine, on par with the higher tier of their mediocre matches. Guerrero won fair and square by blocking a Frankensteiner and hitting a Frog Splash. I can dig that. **¾
