WWE ECW 72

October 23, 2007 – Kansas City, Missouri

The Miz and Extreme Expose start the show. He panders to the fans to choose him to be CM Punk’s opponent at Cyber Sunday. Then he turns to Kelly Kelly and says he should fire her for going on a date with Balls Mahoney. Instead he’s going to make her life miserable on screen. John Morrison comes out and asks to be chosen on the PPV as well. He tells Kelly to leave Miz and join him, ignoring the Mahoney thing entirely. Kelly smacks him. That brings out Mahoney. Morrison beats up both guys until Punk runs out to be the last man standing. That sets up a tag match main event.

Kane nc. Big Daddy V
This was as slow as you’d expect it to be, and then it doesn’t even have a conclusion because Mark Henry runs out and interferes. I’m guessing he was feuding with Kane on Smackdown. Actually, maybe not because Great Khali comes out and joins in the brawl. All this was building to a Halloween battle royal next week. ½*

Punk wants to know how Mahoney’s date with Kelly went the other night. Mahoney laughs and makes faces. Punk is disturbed, and Mahoney says Kelly was too. Punk’s face really delivered here.

Elijah Burke def. Nunzio
I think they were focusing on the wrong half of the previous episode’s tag team squash. Nobody was buying Nunzio winning here, and they didn’t do much to convince people they were wrong. The match wasn’t bad, just kind of pointless because this did little to recharge Burke. *

CM Punk & Balls Mahoney def. The Miz & John Morrison
This was Mahoney’s last match on ECW ever, and honestly it was a solid way for him to go out. It was better than the treatment a lot of the ECW originals got. The action wasn’t that compelling, but Mahoney didn’t look like a total tweeb and his team picked up the win. That’s pretty good considering how WWE treats most midcarders. **

And then at Cyber Sunday the fans picked the Miz to face CM Punk. The votes were pretty close (I’m surprised that almost 30% of the fans picked V), and I’m guessing Real World fans chimed in on this one.

CM Punk def. The Miz {ECW Championship Match}
This was sloppy and bad. The crowd was so into they chanted for Morrison and Chris Jericho during the match. Punk was pretty clearly frustrated, laying in some really stiff shots near the end. At least Punk got to look strong in a singles match for once. *¾
