John Cena def. Johnny Nitro
Hey guys, mind forgetting that this whole Chris Benoit nightmare is happening? Look, we gave you Cena! Are we cool? I can say that watching this 12 years later, I’m very cool with it. I’m not sure that there’s much wisdom in having your new champion tap out to your top guy on his brand’s show, but then the company was just scrambling to get people’s minds off of the nightmare going on at the time so it didn’t really matter. The match was well-worked and for the first time in forever on this show it felt important. That’s a win. Nitro later blames the loss on having a cold. ***¼
Roddy Piper comes out to the ring, which is surprising because I’d think they wouldn’t want to bring out anyone Canadian for a while. He rambles on for a moment before being interrupted by Matt Striker who has a birthday cake for himself. Striker wants a birthday song, but gets cake in his face. Then the Boogeyman comes out and Striker eats worms.
CM Punk def. Elijah Burke {Number One Contender Two Out Of Three Falls Match}
Did the seams in Punk’s mission to carry Burke to a good match here show? Very much they did. Did it make the match less enjoyable to watch? Maybe a little, but it was also interesting to see the places where Punk needed to take the lead to make sure that Burke was on the same page. It wasn’t the most exciting match, and it was probably too long, but 2/3 fall matches work better when they’re structured logically that this definitely was. Lots of points for trying. ***
Like I said a couple episodes back, WWE being forced to scramble after Benoit nightmare forced them to find a new way forward for this show, and so far it’s worked.
