WWE ECW 51

May 29, 2007 – London, Ontario

Randy Orton comes out to rip on Rob Van Dam over an angle that has nothing to do with what’s happening on this show (something about Shawn Michaels) so I have no idea what he’s talking about. Orton and RVD had a match last night during which Orton knocked RVD loopy. They’ll have a thrown-together rematch on the PPV this Sunday. This would be the last time Orton would ever appear on this program, so I ain’t reviewing that PPV matchThe. Tommy Dreamer comes out to get defensive over his dying brand and challenges Orton to a match tonight.

Elijah Burke def. CM Punk {No Disqualification Match}
These two will be a in a six-man tag team tables match on the PPV this Sunday. It was clearly supposed to have RVD in it, but he’s not because they clearly booked the show (and Raw the night before this) on the fly. I don’t know why they insist on giving Burke singles matches that are over ten minutes when he doesn’t have the goods for it. Punk also tried to do stuff he can’t do (a career-long issue for him) and botched a springboard. This was more entertaining than their PPV match (that’s not saying much) thanks to the gimmickery and the Marcus Cor Von table spot at the end. **½

Vince McMahon calls in via satellite to act snarky at the commentators and Bobby Lashley. Lashley is relaxed though because he has an easy match this Sunday when he faces McMahon one-on-one. Lashley gets to steamroll McMahon a bit, but it’s amazing to me that after producing wrestling shows for so many years Vince is so bad at the give-and-take in a segment like this.

Extreme Expose does a thing.

Kevin Thorn def. Balls Mahoney
Thorn hit his old finisher and his new finisher to win this thing in 90 seconds. Well, at least it was efficient. N/A

The Major Brothers are worried about RVD. Matt Striker approaches them to brag about beating Brett, and then to give us some exposition about the brand draft coming up. They get snippy with one another and the segment ends with Striker challenging Brian to a match.

Randy Orton def. Tommy Dreamer
This was short and technically decent, but nobody bought any of Dreamer’s near-falls and then Orton just hit the RKOOUTTANOWHERE for the win. After the match, Orton punts Dreamer, which the old man sells like he doesn’t understand physics. RVD tries to make the save but he’s still punch drunk from the night before. *¾

Okay, on to One Night Stand a few days later. It was pretty telling that the show had an “Extreme Rules” tagline but was no longer treated as an ECW show. That’s been WWE’s biggest problem for a long time: everything eventually just becomes part of the larger WWE brand and loses what made it special. That’s part of the reason NXT has been so successful and I’m constantly in fear that one day it will get the same treatment as everything else. I guess it’s a race to see what holds out longer, Triple H’s will or Vince McMahon’s health.

June 3, 2007 – Jacksonville, Florida

CM Punk, Sandman & Tommy Dreamer def. Elijah Burke, Marcus Cor Von & Matt Striker {Tables Match}
The run up to the finish and the finish of this match were fast-paced fun. Sadly, the rest of the match was more in line with Punk vs. Burke from the week before than it was like the Extreme Rules eight-man tag from after WrestleMania. They really split the difference here. **¾

Bobby Lashley def. Vince McMahon {ECW Championship Street Fight}
McMahon had his son and Umaga with him here, so the only difference between this and the last two PPV matches for this title was that the bad guys didn’t have to tag in and out. This was very boring. It was basically your typical (what would be a) post-match beatdown that went on way too long. I’ll hand it to Styles though, when Lashley finally took control and put a beating on McMahon, he did a good job reciting the reasons that Lashley would be pissed. I think they were banking on Shane’s two big spots making up for the lack of action in this, but it very much did not. *¾
