WWE ECW 43

April 3, 2007 – Fort Wayne, Indiana

Bobby Lashley comes out to talk about his ECW Championship match at WrestleMania. He shows a photo of himself, Donald Trump, and Steve Austin shaving Vince McMahon’s head. He’s not afraid of the inevitable onslaght that McMahon is going to send after him and his title.

CM Punk def. Stevie Richards
This was Punk’s third nondescript win over Richards. It’s nice that Punk got to be in a high-profile match at WrestleMania, but he didn’t really have a storyline going into it and it was long past time to give him something to sink his teeth into. *¾

Timbaland is hanging out with Rob Van Dam, RVD walks away and Extreme Expose approaches him. They want to be in his music video. Meanwhile, the New Breed is still trying to recruit Punk, but he’s still not into it. Then Extreme Expose do their routine while a Timbaland song plays, I assume. Then we get a long recap of WrestleMania.

Snitsky def. Hardcore Holly
I’ve certainly seen worse three-and-a-half-minute matches featuring Snitsky and/or Holly. Snitsky keeps beating up Holly after the match, injuring his arm with a chair and the ring steps. *½

Elijah Burke, Marcus Cor Von, Matt Striker & Kevin Thorn def. Sandman, Rob Van Dam, Sabu & Tommy Dreamer {Extreme Rules Match}
I still don’t understand why the WrestleMania match between these teams wasn’t a hardcore match to begin with. This match got a decent amount of hype when it aired. Given how much better this was than the typical match on this show, and how much better it was than the WrestleMania match I understand how people got excited about this at the time. It was manic, energetic, and violent without being too ridiculous. The ECW Originals controlled in their environment, and the New Breed won by being opportunistic. I liked it a lot, especially because it got in and out without wearing out its welcome. I don’t have faith that this energy was replicated at all in the weeks that followed. ***½
