WWE ECW 03

June 27, 2006 – Roanoke, Virginia

Sabu def. Roadkill {Extreme Rules Match}
I thought all matches on this brand were fought under extreme rules, but the commentators called this one out specifically. This was looking like a squash early on, but then Roadkill actually got to control a lot of the match. It didn’t make for a great match, but it was a surprise. Eh, whatever, the crowd liked the tables and chairs that Sabu used throughout. **¼

Tommy Dreamer calls out Big Show. Show comes out and it’s pretty much the exact same scene as last week. This is going to have diminishing returns. After that, Mike Knox looks at Kelly’s boobs backstage and then tells her not to show them to the whole world. She agrees to be in his corner for his match tonight. Then Kurt Angle cuts a promo where he reveals that if he beats Rob Van Dam tonight he’ll get a title shot at Saturday Night’s Main Event. WWE was pumping out big shows at a ridiculous rate in 2006.

Mike Knox def. Danny Doering
This was a weird one. Knox squashed Doering, of course, but the angle around the match was structured so oddly. Kelly asks a guy in the crowd to undo her bra, Knox attacks him, Kelly storms off, but Knox still wins without any real issue. N/A

Test is coming to ECW. Don’t spend too much time thinking about that, and rather spend time watching Kelly strip. Knox covers her up again. Then some fat dude comes out dressed as a Chippendales dancer and gets beat up by the Sandman. Honestly, good for the Sandman for playing along with the homoerotic gimmick and only being offended because the guy spilled his beer. Then Edge & Lita hijack two front row seats, get a mic from Tazz, and say that Edge is still coming for the title. Like half of this episode is identical to last week. Was Paul Heyman really a part of the creative team for this show?

Rob Van Dam def. Kurt Angle
The first half of this match told a good story (RVD getting outclassed by Angle’s wrestling skills) but it didn’t translate into an exciting stretch. The second half of this match picked up in a really big way, with great reversals, Angle looking dominant, RVD being resilient, and then capping things off with a surprisingly clean finish. That put Angle out of the title picture, though RVD won by the skin of his teeth so there was plenty of room to get him back in there if they ended up deciding that that’s what they wanted to do. Edge attacks RVD after the match. ***½
