WWE ECW 28

December 19, 2006 – Hampton, Virginia

Bobby Lashley starts the show with a promo and my brain kind of breaks because I don’t think I’ve ever heard him cut a promo before. His voice sounds totally unfamiliar to me. He struggles like crazy through the segment, but lets us know that the fans can vote tonight for Sabu, Test, or Rob Van Dam on the ECW website to determine who will get a title shot in two weeks. He also promotes Tribute to the Troops, which will be happening on Christmas night. They promote that but they couldn’t promote Survivor Series on this show? Rene Dupree interrupts, says (arguably true) mean things about the troops, and says he’s Lashley’s title challenger.

Bobby Lashley def. Rene Dupree
Total squash for Lashley in this non-title match. Why did Dupree say he was a title challenger? N/A

Matt Striker def. Ball Mahoney
Brad Armstrong joins the commentary team for this match because this series needs a higher death toll I guess. The match was inoffensive until Striker hit his awful finisher for the first time, but the whole thing was overshadowed by the terrible exchanges between Armstrong and Tazz. *

CM Punk tld. Hardcore Holly
Holly cut a boring promo before the match, saying that Punk has make him tap out in three minutes or less. That’s completely arbitrary and had nothing to do with the rest of Holly’s promo or their match last week. The time limit expires before Punk can get it done, but I’ve gotta say they worked a very logical match given the setting. Holly attacks Punk after the match. **¼

Great Khali def. Shannon Moore
This was set up by Moore accidentally bumping into Daivari backstage. Someone was paid to write this. Total squash, and I don’t review squashes. The pin happens off camera because Tommy Dreamer shows up and attacks Daivari with a chair. Khali takes Dreamer out and slams him on the stairs. Dreamer gets taken out on a stretcher. N/A

Backstage, Mike Knox blames Kelly Kelly being so cavalier with his feelings for his attack on her. I’m almost surprised Knox is the heel here given the way WWE was treating women around this time (and for decades before).

Test def. Rob Van Dam and Sabu {Triple Threat Match}
As usual, Tazz says the quiet part out loud when he reveals that, “whoever wins this match it doesn’t matter,” since nothing is actually on the line here; the fans will decide the winner and this isn’t a contender match. It’s mind-bogglingly dumb, since RVD was always going to win a fan vote but Test goes over here. Test lays out RVD after the voting results are announced. **
