WWE ECW 171

September 15, 2009 – Hamilton, Ontario

Tiffany comes out for a chat. She’s interrupted by William Regal and his crew. Regal doesn’t like that his boys weren’t allowed to be at ringside for his match at the PPV. It caused him grief in his preparation and he wants a rematch. Tiffany isn’t giving him another shot, but she’s giving the entire roster aside from him a chance for a title shot in a battle royal tonight. Regal will be in action now.

William Regal def. The Hurricane
Regal fights in his formalwear. He wins in 2:47 (shown) with the knee strike. This was fine while it lasted, I guess. Paul Burchill attacks Hurricane after the match. *¾

Goldust tries to teach Yoshi Tatsu english, but his tourettes is a barrier. Zack Ryder doesn’t like what’s going on, so Goldust and Tatsu find a cute way to call him a loser. Tatsu and Ryder will fight tonight. Later, Burchill thinks it’s interesting that someone other than Gregory Helms is interviewing him now that he’s beaten up the Hurricane. He’s going to pull double duty tonight and win the battle royal.

Yoshi Tatsu def. Zack Ryder
The Bella Twins were ring announcers again for no reason. This was fun, thought short and felt mostly inconsequential. Tatsu got to do a bit of Mitsuharu Misawa offense, which Matt Striker alluded to without dropping a name. Misawa had died a couple months earlier, and it would have been nice for him to get a name drop here. Tatsu won at 6:19 with the Saikyou High Kick. **½

Zack Ryder def. Shelton Benjamin, Vladimir Kozlov, Ezekiel Jackson, Paul Burchill, Tommy Dreamer, Goldust, Tyler Reks, Sheamus, and Yoshi Tatsu {Number One Contender Battle Royal}
Battle royals are a good opportunity to start a bunch of new feuds, but the only one started here was Benjamin vs. Sheamus because they angrily eliminated each other. I guess Ryder and Goldust got into it, but their issue started earlier in the show. Ryder won by last eliminating Dreamer at 11:56 (shown). The last two minutes were fun, the rest was nothing. **
