WWE ECW 159

June 23, 2009 – Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The show starts with the announcement that the ECW Championship will be defended in a few days at the Bash in a Scramble Match.

Evan Bourne def. Tyson Kidd
I hate the way Josh Matthews says that wrestlers own victories over other wrestlers. Did they buy them? It sounds so fucking dumb. This was fine but I just have to wonder what the point is, considering Bourne just got done jobbing to Henry so Kidd lost to a loser. Bourne hit won with the Shooting Star Press at 5:26. Both guys feel like they’re going nowhere fast. Matt Striker says we will not see the SSP anywhere else, so I guess he was trying to out-dumb Matthews. **½

Finlay def. Zack Ryder
Finlay cut a promo before the match saying he’s mad at everyone because the babyfaces only texted him and didn’t call to say they were sorry for injuring his eye. Good thing they gave Ryder those squash wins, just so he could remind people that Finlay is tough in time for the veteran to be a fifth wheel in a worthless title match on a nothing PPV. Points for throwing a coherent story in here, with Ryder going after the injured eye, I guess. Finlay got the win with a roll up at 7:02. Heel Ryder feels weird. **¼

Striker got in the ring to remind people what a Championship Scramble match is, and then the Hurricane saved a guy backstage while protecting his secret identity.

Jack Swagger & Mark Henry def. Christian & Tommy Dreamer
Another perfectly fine match here, but one that never took off. And why would it take off? Nobody on this show seems motivated to bust their ass. Swagger pinned Christian after hitting the gutwrench powerbomb at 9:48. Henry attacks Swagger after the match. **¼

And now, the Bash.

June 28, 2009 – Sacramento, California

Tommy Dreamer def. Jack Swagger, Mark Henry, Christian, and Finlay {ECW Championship Scramble Match}
Sacramento was really hot for Christian and really quiet for Swagger, who were the two guys that started the match. Swagger got a pin on Finlay with an eye poke and a roll up. Finlay got him back with a pin after the Celtic Cross. Henry came in last and facilitated a cool Tower of Doom spot. He got a pin on Dreamer with a World’s Strongest Slam. Swagger got a pin on Henry himself with a Vaderbomb. The commentators made a big deal out of that, which is good. Christian hit the Killshot on Swagger, but Dreamer stole the pin and hit Christian with the DDT to get the final pin. Dreamer then survived the final minute of the match. This was never boring, but some of the internal logic of the match was wonky. Like why was anyone breaking up pin attempts when the only thing that mattered was getting a pin of their own after the fact? The final dogpile at the end was kind of cute. **¾
