WWE ECW 156

June 2, 2009 – Memphis, Tennessee

Evan Bourne def. Mark Henry
This is dumb. Last week’s funky win was kind of fun, but this disqualification win (at 4:36 when Atlas interfered) didn’t do nearly as much for Bourne. It seems like it was more to cause trouble between Henry and Atlas. Bourne didn’t really get to look strong at any moment here. *¾

Zack Ryder def. Dustin Carwile
Do we need both Ryder and Vladimir Kozlov winning squashes on alternating weeks? Are they heading for a showdown? I think we know how that would end. Ryder wins in 1:59 with the Zack Attack. Matt Striker revealed his inner nice guy/incel here, saying that Ryder is a dumb bro who gets all the girls and doesn’t deserve it and he’s jealous. It’s hilarious. N/A

Finlay apparently wrestled Jack Swagger on Superstars against doctors orders, but Shane Helms wants to know when he’ll officially return. What was unofficial about that Superstars match, exactly?

Tommy Dreamer def. Paul Burchill
I have thought they might put Burchill over here. Katie Lea cut a brutally bad promo before the match. Just brutal. This was short but felt longer, but not as painful as it could have given Burchill’s involvement. Dreamer won at 5:51 with the DDT and then celebrated as if he’d just pinned the Undertaker. After the match, Dreamer says goodbye just in case he loses on Sunday. Swagger comes out and calls Dreamer’s title-or-nothing shtick a cheap ploy to get back in the title picture. Dreamer promises to win the belt to prove Swagger wrong. The back nine of this storyline has been surprisingly effective. **

Christian def. Tyson Kidd
This was pretty good, but it’s not the insanely hyped match it was lauded as when it happened. I understand that people were really hard up for a good match on this show, but can we relax a bit? These guys are great upper midcarders, but it wasn’t like they set the world on fire here (and I think it’s safe to say they weren’t trying to do anything more than give some nice hype to the PPV). Swagger and Dreamer got involved down the stretch, giving Kidd an advantage while causing chaos on the floor. Christian came back with Killswitch for the win at 11:25. Dreamer attacks Christian after the match, which gets a heel reaction. ***¼

And now, Extreme Rules.

June 7, 2009 – New Orleans, Louisiana

Tommy Dreamer def. Christian and Jack Swagger {ECW Championship Triple Threat Hardcore Match}
This was a fun enough plunder match, but that I think took some of the punch out of Dreamer’s emotional story. The finish felt rather sterile, as Dreamer stopped Swagger from hitting the powerbomb on Christian and then nailed him with a DDT for the win and the title at 9:38. But there weren’t any compelling near falls in any direction, so that’s a serious knock on the match. **¾
