Christian comes out to the ring for a chat. He’s stoked to be a champion in Madison Square Garden. He knows Jack Swagger is going to interrupt him, so he calls him out. Tommy Dreamer comes out instead and gets no reaction. Dreamer is happy that Christian is the champion. He says that he has less than six weeks until his contract expires, and he still plans to make good on his promise to be the ECW Champion or to leave the company. Christian says he can have the title shot tonight. Swagger comes out and says Christian only won the title because he cheated. He’s already got a guaranteed rematch at Judgment Day, and that the match tonight can’t be for the title. Tiffany comes out and disagrees, so the title match will happen tonight. Did this really need to take ten minutes?
Tyson Kidd def. Finlay
Hornswoggle is gone, and so is most of Finlay’s pop. This was a pretty decent match actually, but ended in lame fashion when Kidd clubbed Finlay’s leg (after working on it for half the match) and got the pin at 7:35. **¾
Vladimir Kozlov cuts a promo in the ring. Then they shoot backstage to an Evan Bourne interview with Hurricane Helms. That’s interrupted by Paul Burchill who doesn’t hold the microphone close enough to his mouth. And then it’s time for the main event… so Kozlov didn’t have a match? I’m not complaining, I just don’t get the format.
Christian nc. Tommy Dreamer {ECW Championship Match}
This was probably Dreamer’s best singles match in this version of ECW, and if it’s not then it’s at least the best one I can remember. The fans decided to cheer for him after all, and Christian has gotten a good reaction since he returned anyway. Just really good back-and-forth wrestling with a compelling story of Christian doing whatever he could to avoid the DDT and Dreamer doing the same with the Killshot. Then, Swagger ran in and attacked both guys at 9:58. That’s a real bummer, and now I’m just holding out hope that the inevitable Christian vs. Dreamer rematch works out mostly the same way. ***
