WWE ECW 120

September 23, 2008 – Columbus, Ohio

Jim Ross is on commentary replacing Todd Grisham, apparently because I deserve a break from Matt Striker going unchallenged but I don’t deserve to be rid of Striker altogether.

The Miz & John Morrison come to the ring for a chat. They blame Teddy Long for wasting their time putting them up against rookies from the New Superstar Initiative. Long comes out and says that Evan Bourne’s win over Miz means the Initiative is working. Morrison makes fun of Braden Walker getting canned after two matches. Long says there have been more hits than misses. The track record so far is (with historical context) is more like 2 hits and 3 misses. Bourne isn’t in the building tonight, but Ricky Ortiz is. Long has a different idea, and he books Miz against Morrison just to screw with them. Right when that match ends, the winner will face Ricky Ortiz.

Finlay def. Bam Neely
If Neely counted as part of the Initiative, it’d be four misses… but I’d say he technically predates it. I suppose this match was worth it for the Hornswoggle prank in it, but not much else was going on here. Not terrible, but mostly because it was too short to be offensive. Neely had enough of Hornswoggle and went after him, but that left him open to a shillelagh shot at 3:36. *¾

Michelle McCool def. Maryse
This is the first women’s match on this show in three months. It’s a Smackdown match straight up, so I have no real context for it. Over five years before WWE started taking women’s wrestling more seriously, this was decidedly decent. Again, they kept it short enough that nobody had much time to screw up. McCool took a couple gnarly bumps too. Maryse won in 3:28 with a DDT and a very odd cover. That’s a pretty weird way to job your Diva’s Champion in a non-title match. **

Mike Knox def. Chase Stevens
I guess Knox gets to beat a bunch of jobbers on his way out of the brand. This was just a squash, though it was curious that Ross kept calling Knox a future ECW Champion. It’s insane how off base that was. Knox won with his spinny doohicky 1:38. After the match, Jack Swagger came out and debuted the gutwrench powerbomb on Stevens. Tommy Dreamer came to Stevens’ aid, only to be distracted by Knox and powerbombed by Swagger. N/A

John Morrison def. The Miz
Not sure why they didn’t just do a fingerpoke of doom situation here, or a deliberate double count out. I guess these two haven’t been sold as super intelligent up to this point anyway. Striker’s moronic comment of the night was that this was a rubber match… because Morrison was the ECW Champion and Miz had been in the championship match at Unforgiven. This guy remained employed for years. The match ended in a double knockout when neither guy can answer the ten-count in the ring at 6:17 (shown). And then since there was no winner, Ortiz runs out to hit his splash on both guys. This was real dumb, all the way around. The action in the match was fine, but nobody reacted to it because it didn’t make sense. *¾
