John Morrison, The Miz & Chavo Guerrero def. Evan Bourne, Super Crazy & Tommy Dreamer
This is weirdly Super Crazy’s first time on the WWE ECW TV show. The show might have been more entertaining had he been one of the ECW originals, but he was too valuable as a jobber on the other brands, apparently. This was a zippy match with great energy. I especially liked the finish, where the babyfaces got caught up diving onto the heels, which left an opening for Miz to hit a rope-assisted version of the Reality Check on Dreamer at 5:08. ***
Ricky Ortiz def. Gavin Spears
I’m posting this the day after AEW Full Gear, and I didn’t think I’d be stuck watching a Spears match this weekend after skipping that PPV. The most interesting part of this match was the commentators trying to sell that Ortiz’s rally towels were catching on with the fans, while my eyeballs could see that not a single person in the crowd was waving one (after the match the camera shows a group of dudes with an Ortiz sign wave towels). This wasn’t bad, but the crowd doesn’t care about either of these guys so it was super flat. Ortiz won in 3:35 with a splash. *¾
Hornswoggle & Finlay come out for some mic time. He’s giving Mike Knox a second chance to attack him while his back isn’t turned. Knox comes out and says things that don’t make any sense. Finlay replies with more nonsense. Knox says he’ll fight Finlay when he feels like it. Finlay has run out of patience and attacks Knox. The brawl is actually pretty intense but Dean Malenko, IRS, and a bunch of referees break it up. They’ll wrestle next week.
Mark Henry def. Matt Hardy {ECW Championship Match}
This is pretty much a redo because (presumably) this match got shortened for time on the PPV. Ten years later and they’d just let the show run long and make people sit through an 11-hour SummerSlam. There was twice as much chinlockery in this as I can reasonably be expected to handle, but Hardy had a couple of great comebacks and the finish played off of the SummerSlam match, so that counts for something.Henry hit the World’s Strongest Slam at 11:05 (shown) for the win. **¾
