WWE ECW 08

August 1, 2006 – Manhattan, New York

Mike Knox & Test vs. Tommy Dreamer & Sandman {Extreme Rules Match}
This match was ECW’s opportunity to give the hardcore Hammerstein fans something they could actually enjoy, and they went ahead and put the lunks over instead. The crowd is very vulgar, so the sound is turned way down on them. They also turn on Kelly Kelly almost immediately because they’re primordial incels. Anyway, a hot crowd, a simple story, and some plunder made this one a lot more watchable than it would have been on a regular episode. Sadly, it wouldn’t be a Tommy Dreamer hardcore tag team match in WWE without some violence toward women, so Dreamer spanks Kelly. Paul Heyman sends his SWAT after Dreamer to stop that from happening, which gets boos from the East Coast Trump contingent. They throw Dreamer into a barbed wire board and Test pins him. **½

In the back, everyone turns their back on Heyman. Well, except Sabu, who is still demanding a title match. Heyman says never, because he doesn’t want to subject his champion to Sabu’s insanity.

CM Punk def. Justin Credible
Punk is, unsurprisingly, very over with these particular fans. Credible gave him a good fight, and Punk got to shine. They didn’t give this a ton of time but it was enough to make the point that Punk has an exciting arsenal. **¾

Shannon Moore is sitting on the floor in the subway, so we know he’s in New York. Why didn’t he work the show?

Kurt Angle def. The Brooklyn Brawler
I’m not sure what the point of this was (Angle won in about a minute), but it’s sort of moot because Angle would be gone from WWE in eight days anyway. N/A

The vampire finally gets a name. Kevin Thorne should have had this name a week ago.

Batista def. Big Show {ECW Championship Match}
The crowd didn’t know that Batista was going to be Show’s opponent (they were chanting for RVD before Batista came out), so they boo the crap out of Batista when his music hits. It wouldn’t be the last time that happened to him. Show has gone on record saying he was embarrassed to be in this match when the crowd started crapping on the whole thing. Joey Styles calling it a mixed reaction should have been the end of his tenure in WWE. The crowd did chant for Sabu, so at least that storyline was working. Batista won by disqualification when Show hit him with the title belt. This was the main event of an ECW show at the Hammerstein Ballroom, and they couldn’t even give it a clean finish. The match was a disaster, and has become kind of a famous one at that. Sabu attacks Show after the match. ½*
