July 20, 2016 – Los Angeles, California
Vampiro sends Pentagon on a vision quest in a cave to purge him of the fear he has for the man who broke his back. Inside the cave he fights a bunch of versions of himself. The final Pentagon he fights is a Vampiro Pentagon. Vampiro then renames him Pentagon Dark. I love a good level up.
Aerostar, Fenix & Drago def. PJ Black, Johnny Mundo & Jack Evans {Lucha Underground Trios Championship Match}
The commentators make a stink about the tag rules not being followed here, but they’ve done lucha tag rules up to this point so there’s never really an illegal man issue in this company. It factors into the match, as the referee stops the challengers from hitting a triple dive. Why now all of a sudden? Don’t get me wrong, I love tag rules enforced creatively into a match, but not when it screws with established continuity. This got a lot more fun when they put that ill-advised idea behind them. There were still plenty of ways for the heels to be heels, like Mundo using the ropes for leverage, Black hitting a title belt shot, and Evans pulling the referee out of the ring to stop a count. Mundo begging the challengers to ignore the fans’ cries to hurt him more was fun too. It was a nice touch that they made sure to only have Fenix kick out of situations where kicking out was unlikely, as he’s the one who’d done so most in the past. Angelico made his way out on crutches and attacked Mundo, leading to the babyfaces retaking control. Fenix hit Mundo with the Fenix Driver at 11:50 for the win and the titles. ***¾
El Dragon Azteca nc. Black Lotus
This wound up being Lotus’s only Lucha Underground match, as she didn’t have much of a wrestling career after this. She’d spent next to no time in the ring (almost her entire career in this company was in vignettes), so the crowd doesn’t really react to her. Pentagon Dark ran out and attacked Azteca at 4:10, getting the match thrown out. Then he attacks Lotus too, breaking her arm. So we spent dozens of episodes watching backstage segments about the Black Lotus Triad and Azteca’s tribe only for their avatars to be fodder for a new Pentagon gimmick. I’ve actually noticed that the hints at larger forces are consistently made to seem small when they’re executed in the ring. Hopefully LU just didn’t do any more of those kinds of angles going forward since they didn’t seem to want to deliver on them (Matanza Cueto aside). *½
Matanza Cueto def. Pentagon Dark {Lucha Underground Championship Match}
Dario Cueto made this an informal anything goes match. We saw a lot more selling from Matanza Cueto here than we did before, even in the Grave Consequences match. This was a fun brawl, with both guys having a chance to control for a time. The finish was rather crap for the biggest show of the year, as Dario ran in to distract Dark, which gave Matanza the opportunity to hit him with a barbed wire baseball bat and the Wrath of the Gods for the win at 11:31. After the match, Vampiro goes into the ring but nothing happens. Later, he gets back on his meds. Not sure it was worth trashing the previous match only for Dark to lose. ***
Taya def. Ivelisse
Taya won with a double stomp in 6:48. That came after Catrina teleported into the ring (in actual wrestling gear) and then teleported out. That came after a match that took place mostly on the floor, but was fine I guess. Every single match on this episode has had outside interference lead to the finish. This is the season finale. Not impressed so far. **¼
Rey Mysterio def. Prince Puma
This was a wonderful antidote for the rest of the show. No nonsense, actual emotion, Puma scratching and clawing to prove he was as good as Mysterio but at just about every turn being outwitted by the veteran. Just terrific stuff that makes me wish they’d let these two let these two let loose on each other in WWE today. Who would have thought that of all the long-running storylines Lucha Underground had going, the only ones that would be wrapped up were this and Sexy Star over Marty Martinez? Mysterio won in 16:37 with the Ultra Hurricanrana. ****¼
Dark attacks the commentary team at the close of the show, busting Vampiro open with a barbed wire baseball bat and then beating him around the Temple. He also says that he has no master now, and then he eats Vampiro’s blood. Pretty gross.
Outside, Dario Cueto is arrested and taken away in a police van. He looks at the camera and smiles. And that’s it. So, the guy that the city councilman was working for just decided to never come to the temple then? I wonder who that was meant to be and why the storyline was scrapped.
