December 10, 2014 – Los Angeles, California
King Cuerno def. Super Fly
I forgot to mention that an asian woman watched Cuerno’s match against Drago on the previous episode, but I’m reminded because Drago is watching from the rafters here. No sign of the Asian lady though. I was expecting a squash here, but Fly got to control a lot of this and looked good doing it. Cuerno retook control with a knee strike and got the win at 3:28 with the Thrill of the Hunt. **¼
They give us some background on Pentagon, who went to Japan and became influenced by the Samurai. Oddly, all his opponents in the footage from “Japan” are white and black, but none of them are Asian.
Chavo Guerrero def. Fenix
Each guy has their partner from the last episode in their corner. The internet would explode if this match happened today and the outcome was the same. Guerrero does the most interesting thing here that I’ve maybe ever seen him do, countering the Meteora to a half crab. Danny Trejo is in the crowd, and I’m not sure why the whole show isn’t focused on that. Pentagon crotched Fenix up top, which gave Guerrero the opening to hit the frog splash at 5:43. This was fantastic by Guerrero’s standards, and pretty solid by everyone else’s. After the match, Star lets Guerrero know that Blue Demon is coming back for Guerrero. ***
Cage is coming soon to Lucha Underground. Was he any good yet in 2014?
Johnny Mundo def. Big Ryck and Prince Puma {Triple Threat Ladder Match}
I like when a ladder match can tell a coherent story, and this did exactly that. Knowing he’d be double-teamed by Puma and Mundo, Ryck made sure his lackeys Mr. Cisco and Cortez Castro turned this from a 2-on-1 match to a 3-on-2 match. I especially like that it took time for Mundo and Puma to get rid of Cisco & Castro, because why would they be able to get them out of the picture quickly when they’re also fighting each other? With so much money at stake, it wouldn’t make sense for Puma and Mundo to focus on putting down Ryck’s crew when the briefcase hanging from the rafters was always the most important thing. On top of that the match had the requisite dope spots you’d expect from everyone involved, and all the gaga hid Ryck’s limitations really well. Oh, I also really liked how they incorporated the giant Ryck being afraid of heights. There was a moment when Vampiro was complaining that nobody was trying to climb, but those moments were when everyone fully had their wits about them so climbing didn’t make sense in those moments. This just worked. Well, except for B-Boy debuting by running in and unsuccessfully attacking Mundo. That landed like a turd and got basically no reaction. After dispatching B-Boy, Mundo parkoured around Ryck, Cisco & Cortez to grab the briefcase at 19:35. A little overbooked at the end, but otherwise this was damn good. Cueto demands his key back now that Mundo has gotten paid. Instead, Mundo slugs Cueto with a fistful of key. ****
