Lucha Underground: A Unique Opportunity

December 17, 2014 – Los Angeles, California

Dario Cueto, with a black eye covered by sunglasses, introduces tonight’s concept. Ten wrestlers will battle in two matches. The first will be a one fall to the finish Ten Way Match, and the second will be a Battle Royal. The winner of each match will get a reward. It turns out to be a match against each other in the main event to see who will be the final entrant in a Royal Rumble type match in three weeks (when the show comes back from the holiday hiatus) to crown the first Lucha Underground Champion. Cueto calls it Aztec Warfare.

Fenix def. Big Ryck, Drago, El Mariachi Loco, King Cuerno, Mascarita Sagrada, Pentagon, Prince Puma, Son Of Havoc, and Super Fly {Ten Way Match}
If you can get over the very weird convention of seven or eight people laying around while two or three people fight in the ring and do wild spots, then this match is for you. I had a bit of a hard time with it in the moments when it was the most obvious, but a lot of the match was so flashy that it was easy to ignore. They even found interesting ways to improve on the tired Tower of Doom spot. I also enjoyed the wild spots involving Sagrada. One of those spots almost turned Puma heel. You hate to see your heroes beat up tiny men. Matt Striker says the quiet part out loud, “Big Ryck is the minority here.” He meant it in terms of Ryck being the only maskless competitor, but juxtaposed against the moment that all nine other guys were focusing on kicking Ryck it was kind of jarring. Anyway, this never stopped and went by so fast that I wish it was twice as long. Fenix got the win at 10:49 after hitting Puma with a reverse piledriver. ****

Cage fought in a dark match on this episode, but all we get to see is another video of him working out outside. Later, Konnan screams at Puma in the bathroom for losing the match. If Puma misses another opportunity like this, Konnan will be gone.

Mil Muertes def. Bael, Chavo Guerrero, Cortez Castro, Famous B, Johnny Mundo, Mr. Cisco, Pimpinela Escarlata, Ricky Mandel, and Sexy Star {Battle Royal}
I guess Bael is B-Boy’s name here. The Asian girl watched this match from the rafters. This felt like the leftovers of the last match. Only two masked wrestlers were in this, it was filled with a lot of the ancillary wrestlers, and being a  battle royal it had fewer intricate moments. They did keep the Star/Guerrero issue going here when Guerrero eliminated Star. Bael teamed up with Cisco & Castro, but the commentators didn’t address it or the fact that Bael debuted in last week’s main event. After Ryck’s crew was eliminated in short order, the final three were Muertes, Guerrero, and Mundo. From there the match felt more coherent. Mundo eliminated Guerrero with the Slice of Heaven. The final few minutes between Muertes and Mundo were great, really bringing this up to something you might want to go out of your way to watch. When this started I was bummed that the show felt imbalanced, but the longer this went the more I got sucked in and I appreciate that the style was slower and more punishing. Muertes won at 10:59 by clotheslining Mundo to the floor. ***½

Mil Muertes def. Fenix
This was short but cute. Muertes seemed to be getting tired, working another match so soon after winning the battle royal. That gave Fenix the chance to dominate for a bit with his speed. But as soon as Muertes caught him, and hand around the throat and a Flatliner gave him the win at 5:47. **¾

Cueto speaks to someone, seemingly in a cage, about how excited he is to have the Lucha Underground Championship in play. But he can’t let this person touch the belt, because this person likes to destroy pretty things.
