Lucha Underground: The Open Road to Revenge

October 12, 2016 – Los Angeles, California

Chavo Guerrero takes out El Dragon Azteca in the locker room with a chair, putting him out of action for the night so that Guerrero can get revenge on Pentagon Dark tonight. Rey Mysterio walks in, but he’s too late to do anything. He bellows a very fun CHAVOOOOOOOO scream, a la Captain Kirk and Khan.

Dr. Wagner Jr & Famous B def. Son of Havoc & Mascarita Sagrada
Havoc & Sagrada roll up in a dope motorcycle and sidecar, and B’s reaction is priceless. After some fun, goofball action, Wagner hits Sagrada with the Michinoku Driver and lets B get the winning pin. There was no opening bell, but going off the first point of contact this match went 5:19. **½

We get another tick tock white rabbit video. Spooky stuff. Then they announce Prince Puma vs. Mil Muertes for next week.

Sexy Star def. Jack Evans {Gift of the Gods Championship Match}
Evans hit Star with the second meanest dropkick I’ve ever seen here. The first meanest is in a joshi training video that I saw in college and can’t find a clip of anywhere for the life of me. Besides that, this was a good but unspectacular match until their allies got involved. That bit was exciting. Fenix distracted the referee, allowing Star to hit a low blow and the Purge for the win at 9:13. ***

Guerrero gets Dario Cueto to put him in the main event against Dark. Mysterio barges in and demands the match against Guerrero. Guerrero tries to attack, so Mysterio beats him up a little. Cueto makes it a triple threat main event.

Pentagon Dark def. Rey Mysterio & Chavo Guerrero {Triple Threat Match}
This was better than I expected it to be. And the main reason it was better was one that I’d never have guessed; the commentary elevated the action! Matt Striker gave a ton of context about Guerrero and Mysterio’s history in WWE, while Vampiro went even farther back and talked about issues that Mysterio’s uncle and Guerrero’s father had with each other in Mexico. I don’t even know if what Vampiro was saying was true, but I was fascinated nonetheless. Also, it’s nice to hear commentators talk about a rival promotion (in this case WWE) without ripping on them, and just using the information for the sake of historical context. I wish this was how all wrestling companies would talk about one another. It enhances the product and keeps those involved from looking like petulant babies. Dark got the win with the package piledriver on Mysterio at 8:42, which felt like a huge win as Mysterio had been undefeated in singles matches to this point. After the match, Dark tried to break Mysterio’s arm, but Mysterio fought him off. But then, Guerrero ran in and attacked Mysterio with a chair, destroying his notoriously injury-prone knee. ***
