Lucha Underground: The Gift that Keeps Giving

July 25, 2018 – Los Angeles, California

Jake Strong def. Sammy Guevara
Famous B’s leg was saved and not amputated after all. Why even tease that? The commentators say that no talent has ever taken the Temple by storm like Strong. Didn’t Matanza Cueto win the Lucha Underground Championship in his debut? Strong was 1-1 going into this. Somehow this match felt quite long at four minutes. Even with the match going outside the ring. Maybe it’s because they took a while to set up a Guevara dive off of the balcony. I dunno, I guess Guevara’s comeback was fun. That’s not nothing. Strong won with the anklelock at 3:59. He breaks Guevara’s ankle, so it seems like they’re building to him vs. Pentagon Dark. **¼

Matanza Cueto def. Vinnie Massaro
Antonio Cueto orders Massaro a pizza before the match, but it’s Massaro’s last meal. Matanza beats up the pizza delivery guy and then beats Massaro in 1:08 with the Wrath of the Gods onto the pizza. Then, Massaro and the pizza delivery guy (and the pizza) get sacrificed. This culling of the jobbers, writing them off the show, is giving season four a very final season vibe. I know that’s what ended up happening, but it’s also clear that LU was hoping to continue on after this. N/A

Dezmond X, El Dragon Azteca & King Cuerno def, Ivelisse, Son Of Havoc & The Mack
Antonio changed this from a six-way match for the Gift of the Gods title to a trios match with the winning team going on to a triple threat match for the title. Sure, why not change it up a bit? Mack, Havoc, and Ivelisse were made a team because of their success as partners in various forms. Killshot watched as his trios partners fought with Havoc’s ex-girlfriend. This was fun and fast, and surprisingly void of shenanigans from any extra parties. Cuerno pinned Havoc with the Thrill of the Hunt at 6:16. Mil Muertes runs out and attacks Mack after the match. He attacks Havoc too. Killshot thinks about making the save but hits Havoc, seemingly by mistake. That was well executed. ***

El Dragon Azteca def. Dexmond X and King Cuerno {Gift of the Gods Championship Triple Threat Match}
X still has no LU trunks on, but I forgive him because he shows off how inhumanly fast he is here. The commentators might want to chill a little on calling out the legendary wrestlers who first did every move you see in this match, as it makes the action here feel derivative. For his part, Cuerno was very aggressive. Azteca often looked out of his league (in character), as he often does in LU, which makes the decision to put him over here a confusing one. Azteca caught X with a Victory Roll off of the second turnbuckle for the win at 11:28. Despite Azteca not being built up for this at all, the crowd is hot for the finish. That’s nice. ***½

Marty Martinez is drunk at home. Mariposa wakes him up by waterboarding him. She asks him if he knows why she turned on him at Ultima Lucha. He guesses wrong, and she says he lacks focus. His new obsession with taking Dark’s teeth is a distraction. He should be going for the title. This is shot from both of their points of view, so everyone is upside down. Kinda interesting.
