Lucha Underground: The Bulls of Boyle Heights

December 7, 2016 – Los Angeles, California

Dario Cueto welcomes Angelico into his office. Angelico wants the Johnny Mundo match now, title or not. Cueto tells Angelico about Mundo’s lawyer stopping the match. Angelico threatens to get his own lawyer and sue Cueto for an unsafe working environment. Then he threatens Cueto physically (why don’t more people do that?). Cueto offers Angelico a spot in the Battle of the Bulls tournament, the winner of which gets a shot at Mundo’s title. Angelico accepts.

The house band incorporates a “This is Awesome” chant into their song tonight. That’s pretty neat.

Cage def. Dr. Wagner Jr., Joey Ryan, and Texano {Semifinal Match}
The tournament is four four-way matches, leading to a four-way final. Matt Striker says the quiet part out loud when he admits that Cage and Texano are “mired” in a best of five series. It really is stunting their stories and makes it feel like they’re frozen in time. I hope they wrap that up soon. This was chaotic fun, though a poor-placed camera made everyone but Cage look like doofs for walking into position for a dive. Texano hit a Last Ride on Ryan, but Cage knocked out Texano with his own bull rope and stole the pin on Ryan at 8:36. I dug most of this a lot. ***½

Ricky Reyes returns to Captain Vasquez’s office. He says that Cueto knows that he’s a cop so he has to bail on the case. She says she doesn’t trust Joey Ryan, so she needs him in the Temple. Since his cover is blown, she gives him a mask and a new identity.

Sexy Star def. PJ Black
Cueto gave Star a rematch against Mundo in a steel cage match thanks to her win here because he felt like she was robbed of the title. If she lost this match she’d never have gotten another title shot. I’m just glad that they didn’t immediately demote Star to the Taya feud and let her stay in the title scene for a while longer. This was good, and Jack Evans running in to try to cheat (and having it backfire) was executed really well. Star caught Black with a roll up at 6:29. ***

Kobra Moon sits on a snake throne and talks to two men kneeling before her about the history of their Aztec tribe. She blames Drago deserting them for their fall. Pindar and Vibora (is this the origin of Judas Devlin being Luchasaurus?). are charged with retrieving him. Hopefully things get off to a better start for the reptiles than it did for the rabbits. It’s also interesting that they shifted this to make Moon the leader of this group, when she’d previously made it seem like Pindar was the leader and she’s been so ineffective in the ring. Elsewhere, Cueto begs his brother to be in the Battle of the Bulls tournament, but Matanza only wants to fight Rey Mysterio. Dario eggs Matanza on, telling him that he gave El Dragon Azteca his spot in the tournament. Matanza knocks out Dario and steals the key to his cell.

The Mack def. El Dragon Azteca, Marty Martinez, and Mil Muertes {Semifinal Match}
This was just as wild as the four way from earlier, but didn’t have the contrivance issue that match did. It also had a really fun big boy battle between Muertes and Martinez. Azteca looked to have the match won with dives on Muertes, but Matanza ran in and beat the crap out of him. A bloody Dario ran out with the key to retrieve his brother. Shortly after, Mack hit Martinez with a stunner for the win at 8:26. Really good episode this week. ***½
