June 3, 2015 – Los Angeles, California
Dario Cueto is confused as to why Chavo Guerrero is back in his office. Guerrero rats out Black Lotus, letting Cueto know that El Dragon Azteca trained Black Lotus, and that she’s coming for Matanza. He tells Cueto that he’ll take a higher bid if he’ll protect him around the clock from Mexico.
The house band plays a weird version of Hava Nagila, or something clearly inspired by it.
Jack Evans def. Argenis {Ancient Medallion Match}
Cueto put the medallion on the line before the match because he didn’t think it was interesting enough on its own. Evans does a lot of awesome stuff here. It’s cool to hear the commentators give it up for Evans, who was doing the style that makes up most of this show (a lucha style palatable to Americans) for over ten years before this. I also appreciate that the commentators call out when the intricate moves don’t go as planned but do so without shitting on it. So yeah, this was a little sloppy but good enough to keep me engaged for six minutes. Evans got a funky roll up for the win at 6:08. **¾
Guerrero lets Lotus know that he got Cueto to allow her into the Temple, and from there they can steal the key and kill Matanza. Then Guerrero attacks her, but she’s ready for him. Cortez Castro attacks and gets taken out. Same goes or Mr. Cisco. Guerrero gets his wits back and attacks her from behind and handcuffs her.
Ivelisse, Angelico & Son of Havoc def. Big Ryck, Cage & DelAvar Daivari {Lucha Underground Trios Championship Match}
What a motley crew of challengers. It was going to be the Mack on Ryck’s team, but Cage beat him up in the locker room to prove he deserved the spot. I guess that plus Daivari having Ryck on his payroll makes this less motley than I suggested. Ivelisse came into this still injured and never tagged in. This felt kind of half-assed, which I feel bad saying and it may not have actually been the case, but that’s how it felt. The ending was lazy too, as Texano ran out and distracted Daivari, leading to Son of Havoc hitting a Shooting Star Press for the win at 7:39. **½
Guerrero and the Crew bring Lotus to Cueto. He’s going to put her in the same room as Matanza so he never gets lonely again. This is getting dark.
Pentagon def. Sexy Star {Submission Match}
The commentators have an accidentally interesting debate about whether Pentagon chopping Star’s chest is out of line because she’s a woman, or whether it’s infantilizing to her to say that. The wrestlers told a good story too, with Star having a hard time locking in submissions because she was so much smaller than Pentagon. But then they took the easy way out and had Super Fly return and attacks Star, leading to Pentagon locking her in a Mexican surfboard for the win at 9:35. I get wanting to keep Star strong, but Pentagon’s whole thing was submissions so his advantage was built in here. After the match, Vampiro saves Star from getting her arm broken. Vampiro storms off and goes to the bathroom. Audio clips of ominous things he’s said about his wrestling past play over a visual of him slamming his head into a mirror. ***
