Matanza Cueto def. Taya
Taya demanded this match so she could get revenge for her ruined wedding. Antonio Cueto called this one of Matanza’s sacrifices, but he only won this by disqualification when Johnny Mundo kicked his face at 2:37. Taya controlled a lot of this, which was a pretty satisfying follow-up to the wedding. Then, Mundo beat the crap out of Matanza after the match and gots out of dodge before Matanza zombie’s up. *½
Fenix & Mil Muertes def. El Dragon Azteca & The Mack {Tornado Tag Match}
Four seasons in and this is the first time I can remember a tag match being booked to build to two major singles matches. The heel team is very interesting and it makes me sad that it never became permanent. I liked most of this chaotic action, but hated one moment; Fenix spin kicked a cameraman by accident and the cameraman popped up, got right back to work, and no-sold the kick. Why would he think that’s a good idea? Vampiro tried to sell it as all Lucha Underground employees being tough, but it made Fenix look like a chump. It’s not really fair to penalize the guys in the match for something they didn’t do, but it hurt the match at the end of the day. Fenix and Muertes hit stereo finishers for the win at 9:51. ***¼
Ricky Mundo def. Famous B
B decided to get back in the ring so that he’d be less vulnerable to guys like Matanza and Jake Strong. Mundo won at 1:33 with a neckbreaker. After the match, Mundo admits that he released Matanza and ruined Taya’s wedding. He was tired of being treated like a nobody, and he challenges Taya for a match at Ultima Lucha. Then he puts Beautiful Brenda in the crossface. The implication is not lost on the crowd, who boos him about as loud as they’ve ever booed anyone. ¾*
Pentagon Dark def. Reklusa
It’s not clear to me what this was meant to accomplish. It never felt like Dark would lose, and while Reklusa got to get some fun offense in the story was clearly that she was only able to because Dark was toying with her. I wonder what the thought process was behind putting the top babyface in so many matches against women. I’m sure the original idea was to do Reklusa vs. Sexy Star (Star had been blacklisted for injuring someone in the ring), but this is such a strange, pointless backup plan. The match wasn’t terrible, but it also wasn’t believable when Reklusa kicked out of a couple of these head drops, including the package piledriver on the apron. I dunno, this was more weird and universe-breaking than it was compelling. Dark won at 9:43 with a package piledriver. After the match, Dark tries to piledrive Reklusa onto some tacks, but Marty Martinez runs out and beats up Dark with a barbed wire baseball bat. The crowd barely boos, even as Martinez threatens to light Dark on fire. **¾
