Antonio Cueto wants to put Jake Strong in the Ultima Lucha main event. Strong doesn’t want to be gifted the match, so he rejects it. Cueto gives him an Ancient Medallion instead. The Medallion looks way more cheap than it is used to. Did they lose the original medallions? Strong says this is his temple now. Strong’s lack of charisma has never been more apparent than it was here.
Jake Strong def. PJ Black, Big Bad Steve, Hernandez, King Cuerno, Dante Fox, and Aerostar {Battle Royal}
Cueto said that all of the wrestlers in this match were awarded Ancient Medallions. Steve had never won a match going into this, so that’d dumb as hell. Cueto doesn’t like the number seven, so the winner of this match chooses who won’t continue on to the Gift of the Gods title match. Hernandez went out first because he’s insufferable. Fox and Strong took out Black and Cuerno next. Strong shoved out Aerostar, and then moments later dumped Fox for the win at 3:12. This was not awesome, especially the final bit. Strong insisted that nobody be eliminated so that he can beat even more people in the title match. I like that angle, especially as it makes keeps Strong’s disobedience toward Cueto consistent. Strong says he can fight even more people, so Cueto books him against Johnny Mundo in tonight’s main event. Presumably the idea is also to soften up Mundo, who is after Cueto’s son. *
The Mack def. Killshot
Son of Havoc watched from the balcony. This ended at 2:49 when Killshot got disqualified Mil Muertes attacked Mack. I’ve always felt that things like that should mean the match is a no-contest, as Killshot had no idea Muertes would do that. Also, after multiple seasons with basically no disqualifications, we’re seeing tons of them now. The match was a sloppy, but fun. I would like to see a real match between these two. Havoc tried to save Mack, but Killshot attacked him and Muertes attacked Mack some more. *¾
Ivelisse and XO Lishus come out and announce that there will be a three ways Trios Championship match at Ultima Lucha among them, the Rabbit Tribe and the Reptile Tribe. But Joey Ryan is out of action, so they’re replacing him with Sami Guevara. In light of 2020 revelations, they traded one very problematic predator for a less problematic trash mouth. Famous B comes out to remind Guevara that he has an exclusive contract with him, which looks to be 1,000 pages. He tells Ivelisse and Lishus that they’ll get a cease and desist, and that Guevara can team with Dr. Wagner Jr. and Texano after he pulls them from their house show in Tijuana. Guevara dives onto B instead, and then puts B and the contract in the garbage. B’s promos are so good I can’t believe that this was the peak of his career.
Jake Strong def. Johnny Mundo
If you needed a sign that Lucha Underground was on a downswing, see as evidence this continuation of a feud from eight years prior that nobody cared about. Morrison tried to bump like crazy for Strong, but the guy just doesn’t (has never and will never) have it. Vampiro tries to get Strongs lack of connection with the crowd over as a positive, which is nothing but hilarious whenever a commentator misguidedly tries to do it. Strong won in 13:08 with the anklelock. Points for Mundo’s wild bumps and selling, and a good final couple of minutes. Weird to see Mundo job so clean before his big match against Matanza Cueto at Ultima Lucha. Cueto comes out after the match and beat up a prone Mundo. Taya tried to save but got beat up too. ***¼
